How to Concentrate While Studying for Praxis Core

concentrate while studying praxis core -magoosh

You’re reading a Praxis Core study book and reviewing for the reading section. All of a sudden, your mind drifts to your weekend plans. What should you wear? What should you do? You grab your cell phone to text a friend. And just like that you’ve lost your study groove. If you’re wondering how to concentrate while studying for the Praxis Core, try these 8 tips during your next study session.

Prepare Your Study Space

Before you begin studying, prepare your study space. Turn off your phone and remove other distractions. Prepare a table and comfortable chair to use. Gather all your necessary study materials. Make sure that your environment is conducive for effective studying.

Create a Study Plan

Think about when you study best as you create your study plan. Determine what you’ll study at each study session. Then, create a routine. When studying becomes part of your regular routine, you’ll have an easier time concentrating as you study.

Plan Study Breaks

In the process of making your study plans, don’t forget to schedule regular breaks. Taking a break will help you stay fresh and focused when you study. During your break, you could:

  • Go for a walk
  • Eat a healthy snack
  • Exercise
  • Call a friend
  • Run an errand

Set an alarm to remind you when it’s time to take a break, and choose an activity that will get you up and moving.

Alternate Study Activities

It can be difficult to study the same material for hours on end. Instead, mix up your study sessions by alternating activities and subjects. Change subjects every 1-2 hours, and switch between reading and active activities. Some of those activities include:

  • Review flashcards
  • Draw diagrams
  • Outline your study notes (our video below can help!)
  • Complete practice tests

Listen to Music

Not everyone benefits from listening to music when studying. If music helps you concentrate, create a playlist with music that you enjoy.

Reward Yourself

Pick something that you enjoy as a reward for studying. It should be something that will provide you with the motivation or incentive to concentrate on your study materials.

Reign in Mental Driftings

Make a note of any time that you find your mind wandering from your studies. Then, remind yourself that you need to focus. By noting these occasions, you’ll find that your mind will wander less and less. You’ll also have an easier time concentrating.

Study with Others

If you need help concentrating, enlist others to help you. As you study with a partner or group of people, you are accountable to them to follow the study plan. Choose people that will encourage you to work hard and do your best.

If you’re wondering how to concentrate while studying for the Praxis Core exams, try any of these tips. Use the ones that work for you, so you can make the most of your study sessions.
