Before seeking a position in gifted education, you need to show that you have an understanding of the content knowledge. That’s where the Praxis for Gifted Education comes in. You’ll need to take and pass the exam to show that you have the skills and knowledge to confidently hold a position in gifted education. So what do you need to know about the Praxis for Gifted Education? Here are answers to some of the common questions about the exam.
Who?
The exam is designed for professionals looking to work in gifted education. These individuals are either completing a graduate program or have completed an undergraduate degree and experience with gifted education in their school district.
What?
Consisting of 120 questions, the exam should be completed within a 2-hour period. The test covers 5 content areas:
- Development and characteristics of gifted students
- Learning environments
- Instruction methods
- Identification and assessment of gifted students
- Professionalism
Where?
Similar to other Praxis exams, the Praxis for Gifted Education exam needs to be taken at an approved testing center. These centers range from university campuses to libraries. To find a testing location near you, check out the ETS website.
When?
Some Praxis exams can be taken at a time that is convenient for you. The Praxis for Gifted Education, however, has specific date ranges for completing the exam. The exam dates are:
- September 5-17, 2016
- December 5-17, 2016
- March 13-25, 2017
- June 12-24, 2017
You can take the exam anytime during these time periods. Just give yourself plenty of time to study before the exam.
How?
You’ll complete the exam on a computer. There are several different types of questions that you’ll be faced with on the exam, such as:
- Choose the oval
- Check the boxes
- Pick a part of a graphic
- Type in a response
- Drag-and-drop onto a graphic
- Drop-down menu selection
Taking computer-based practice tests are a great way to familiarize yourself with the test and these types of questions. As you come across unfamiliar questions, don’t panic! Remember that you’re not penalized for guessing, so eliminate the obviously wrong questions and use the knowledge that you have to make an educated guess.
