About Us

The Story of Magoosh

Despite doing well on their GMATs while using old-school prep methods, Bhavin, Hansoo, Pejman, and Vikram knew there had to be a better way to study. “Why should students have to take expensive, inconvenient classes or use outdated books with poor explanations just to prep for these tests?”, they thought. Many long nights later, Magoosh was born!

Our goal is to take the best of traditional teaching and share it with students everywhere online. Everyone should have access to fun, convenient, effective ways to learn.

With our friendly and experienced teachers, an easy-to-use interface, and consistently excellent material, we believe that we’re off to a great start!

What’s Magoosh?

Magoosh is a play on an Old Persian word, magush, one who is highly-learned, wise, and generous. It actually comes from the same root as the English word “magic”. Neat, huh?

Bhavin Parikh, CEO & Founder

Bhavin earned his BS/BA in Economics and Computer Science from Duke University and his MBA from the Haas School of Business at UC Berkeley. He loves product design, internet marketing, and learning from video. Bhavin has also played on several Nationals-level ultimate frisbee teams.

Zach Millman, Engineer

Zach has been Magoosh’s technical wizard for two and a half years. He received a BS in Electrical Engineering & Computer Science with a minor in Japanese from UC Berkeley. Zach really loves good interface design and bad sci-fi movies. He also has at least six coffee cups on his desk and he’s always kvetching.

Margarette Jung, Marketing Manager

Margarette graduated from UC Berkeley with a double major in English Literature and Linguistics. She has been teaching for large companies and tutoring privately for more than 5 years. She likes standardized tests, the Internet, and cookies.

Chris Lele, GRE/SAT Expert

For the last ten years, Chris has been helping students excel on the SAT, GRE, and GMAT. In this time, he has coached 5 students to a perfect SAT score. Some of his GRE students have raised their scores by nearly 400 points. He has taken many GMAT students from the doldrums of the 600s to the coveted land of the 700+.

Mike McGarry, GMAT Expert

Mike has a BS in Physics and an MA in Religion, both from Harvard, and over 20 years of teaching experience specializing in math, science, and standardized exams. Mike likes smashing foosballs into orbit, and despite having no obvious cranial deficiency, he insists on rooting for the NY Mets.

Rachel Wisuri, Community & Support Manager

Rachel graduated with a double major in History and French from UC Berkeley. She loves writing and researching, and has written for several publications. Rachel will forever be a student at heart. In her free time she can be found eating peanut butter, listening to the Beatles, and going to parks.

Lena Brooks, Office & Operations Manager

Lena graduated from UC Berkeley with a double major in English Literature and Gender Studies. She is an experienced freelance writer and editor. Lena has edited and contributed to a number of arts and literature publications. She spends much of her free time covering things in glitter.

Chris Swimmer, Marketing Analyst

Chris got his BS in Economics from Middle Tennessee State University. Chris has called four continents home (teaching on two) and likes conversations in foreign languages, cramming all of his possesions into a backpack, and an occasional bowl of gourmet ramen.

Lucas Verney-Fink, Tutor

Standardized tests and English grammar are two of Lucas’s favorite things, and he’s been teaching both since 2008. Between his time at Bard College and his time spent teaching abroad, he’s tried to learn a total of three other languages. He speaks none of them well.

Delanie Ricketts, Student Intern

Delanie is a senior at UC Berkeley studying Peace and Conflict Studies, and Global Poverty and Practice. She has been writing for several years for marketing and communications. While she loves music of all genres, Delanie plays oboe and English horn for Cal’s Symphony Orchestra.
