How to Best Use Resume Bullets

“Scannability” is one of the most important features of a quality resume. To make your resume reader-friendly and easy for a hiring manager to scan, you need to use resume bullets. Just follow these 6 tips on how to use resume bullets to improve your resume!

1. Highlight Accomplishments and Skills

One of the greatest reasons to use resume bullets is because they help highlight your accomplishments, awards, duties, skills, and achievements. You can use bullets under your summary, work experience, volunteer work, and education experience.

Carefully select what you want to highlight, especially any notable skills that could help you in the job for which you’re applying. If you exceeded the company’s sales quota by 150%, mention it. If you single-handedly trained hundreds of employees, include it. These types of accomplishments should be highlighted, and bullets are a great way to do it.

2. Limit the Number of Resume Bullets

It’s difficult to bring attention to any particular achievement if you list a large number of them on your resume. Instead of saturating your resume with bullets, limit yourself to 3-4 items under each job. Not only will this help draw attention to your accomplishments, it will also force you to choose the best ones to represent yourself to potential employers.

3. Carefully Choose the Order

While scanning through resumes, there’s a pretty good chance that the hiring manager won’t read every bullet point on your resume. Therefore, make sure that you carefully determine the order of your bullets. Put the most impressive items first, so you can be assured that these won’t go unnoticed.

4. Utilize Action Verbs and Numbers

Start each bullet point with an action verb. Examples of action verbs include:

  • Assessed
  • Coordinated
  • Documented
  • Evaluated
  • Executed
  • Expanded
  • Generated
  • Implemented
  • Initiated
  • Mentored
  • Orchestrated
  • Organized
  • Produced
  • Reduced
  • Streamlined
  • Sustained

Action verbs make your resume more powerful and help you stand out from other applicants.

5. Be Consistent

Should you put a period at the end of each bullet? Whether you decide to do it or not, just make sure that you’re consistent throughout your entire resume.

Also, be consistent with verb tenses. Verbs that describe your current position should be present tense, but verbs used to describe past jobs should be past tense.

6. Choose a Simple Format

Fancy bullet points may look nice, but stick with simple ones instead. You don’t know whether the hiring manager will be able to see the special symbols on his or her computer. If it doesn’t work, it could ruin the format and make your resume look unprofessional. To prevent this from happening, keep it simple.
