Importance of Past Year Papers for JEE Main

Along with an in-depth knowledge, it is also necessary that you develop the knack for quick problem-solving. An easy way to do this is by practising previous years’ papers. Pattern Of Questions

Every exam can be characterised by the type of questions asked. The JEE Advanced is known for questions that require you to be crystal clear with the basics, while JEE Main tries to test the breadth of your knowledge rather than depth. While preparing, it is necessary for you to understand what kind of questions will be asked. This will help you keep calm when you sit for the actual exam.

It is advisable that you go through questions from at least the last 10 years. Attempting these papers will give you a clear sense of the distribution of questions, the difficulty level, and can also help you come up with an exam strategy. Everyone has their own unique style when it comes to taking exams. Some like to start with the Chemistry section and get over it fast, while others prefer to start out strong with either Physics or Maths, and attempt Chemistry in the middle.

After coming up with your plan of action, starting practising it by solving previous years’ papers. See how your plan works out in real-time on these papers. This will give you an idea of how efficient your method really is.

How To Practise Previous Papers

Papers are set to be solved within a certain time frame. It may have a lot of easy problems but the time might not be sufficient to solve all of them. Solving only a question or two from previous years might result in mistaken assumptions about the pattern of the paper. The most efficient way to make the most of it is by solving the entire paper within the given time constraints.

Clear your timetable and sit down for three hours without any distractions. The closer it is to the timing of the actual exam, the better. Try to simulate the exam centre environment. Attempt the previous papers as if you are giving the actual exam. This exercise will give you a feel of the real thing, which prepares you mentally and physically to sit through the entire test. These are the best conditions for you to try out your new strategies and see if there’s something you’ve missed out on.

Practise is paramount but you should not solely rely on it. Make sure you study the concepts well and are thorough with the syllabus before you start full-fledged test practise. Otherwise, it will turn out to be a waste of time and effort. Keep your mind calm and be well rested before you start the practise sessions.

All the best for your exams. 🙂
