With the announcement of the results of JEE Advanced, the race for getting admissions in the best colleges of the country begins and everyone is hunting for seniors to get an idea of how it works. Some are confused about what to fill and some are worried about the general admission procedure, refunds, reporting, sliding and the list of queries goes on without a stop! So here I bring to you a summary of the entire procedure and all that you need to know about the JEE Advanced counseling. This is JEE Advanced counseling made simple in an article!
JEE Advanced Counseling: Registration
The entire counseling procedure begins three to four days after the announcement of results and continues for about a month and finally concludes in the mid of July when the classes start in the IITs and the NITs. The Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) conducts the counseling and tries to make it a smooth process. The JoSAA committee announces a comprehensive schedule for the counseling procedure along the JEE Advanced Result declaration.
The first step involves getting yourself registered for the JEE Advanced counseling. This has to be necessarily done by the eligible candidates before the aforesaid deadline announced by JoSAA. The students have to fill in all the required details to get their user ID and password for continuing the counseling procedure and should save these details with utmost care to avoid any problems later. Once you obtain the user ID and the password the first step to the counseling gets successfully completed and you can then proceed to the next step which is both complicated and crucial for every aspirant.
JEE Advanced Counseling: Choice filling
The second step involved in the JoSAA counseling requires the students to prepare their choice list according to their preferences. I call this the most complicated step because before visiting the portal the students feel that they are clear about their choices but as soon as they visit the portal they see the list of hundreds of colleges and branches in front of them with no limit to the number of choices one can fill in and all their previous choices go haywire. So for a better choice filling it’s important to know the exact details of the procedure beforehand.
The portal for JEE Advanced choice filling consists of two sections. One section consists of the choices available to the candidate and the other one is blank. You need to move the preferred colleges and branches from the first to the second section in an order you like.
An important point to note is that JoSAA conducts the counseling of JEE Mains together with JEE Advanced and so the first section consists of a list of IITs, NITs, IIITs, GFTIs and some more colleges. This is done to ensure a better process so that seats don’t go waste and no useless seat blocking can take place. This also adds to the confusion because the students are given a lot more choices and various worse case scenarios make them fill in loads of choices.
Once you move your choices you can reposition them and move them up and down according to your preference too. Students can make as many changes as they want till they ‘lock’ their choices. So yes, you can keep on saving your choices but locking them would mean that you can’t change them. Here, I would introduce you to a new term that is ‘Mock Allotments’, which many people ignore!
Mock Allotments happen with the registration and choice filling deadline. This gives aspirants a chance of changing their choices according to the tentative results. The Mock Allotment is the allotment of mock seats to all those who have either saved or locked their choices before the Mock Allotment dates. This doesn’t give a clear picture but surely is a good estimation to realize if any possible changes should be done or not. So I personally feel students should not just make lists in their notebooks and can save them roughly on the portal to be a part of the mock allotment. There can be two mock rounds too. Also, I would advise you to not lock choices in the first time only as with the days passing a lot of new thoughts pop up so think it through first! However, do lock your choice list 24 hours prior to the deadline to avoid any confusion last minute.
Once you lock your choices, sit back and pray! Hope for the best! Since it’s the most complicated step, this article would be incomplete without some tips on choice filling!
Few tips on choice filling:
- Make a list of your interests and chalk out your priorities too. You should explore your interests and if not then set your priorities. For example, if you wish to go for higher studies or you want secure placements and so on. These priorities will help you in choosing the desired branch and also decide between a four year and a five-year course.
- Then check the past year cutoff ranks and divide the colleges and branches into three categories:
- Preferred branches/colleges which are out of your rank range
- Preferred branch/college which you might get
- Less preferred branch/college
- Once this classification is done, fill your choices in the order as the above classification so that you don’t rule out the chances of any possible miracle that might get you something from the first category. The third category would be helpful if JoSAA counseling is your only hope and you don’t have any other backup.
- Once you get a choice filled at say X position, you won’t be eligible for admission to any choice filled below X. So be careful!
- Do check the culture, college life and location as exposure is very important!
JEE Advanced Counseling: Seat allotment
Once the registration, choice filling, locking and mock allotments are complete the final seat allotment takes place. This step takes place in the form of several rounds and the cutoff ranks are released for each round. Till now the procedure was free of cost and happened online.
In seat allotment, the students are given seats according to their filling and ranks (both category and general ranks). The students who are allotted seats need to report to their nearest RC (reporting center) and pay the required admission fees and secure their seat. The students need to report to the nearest IIT if their allotted seat is in an IIT and to a NIT if it’s a NIT.
The students then are given three choices:
- To opt for internal sliding and locking the obtained college: this makes you eligible for branch change in that college only and your college doesn’t change in the further rounds.
- To opt for a complete sliding: this makes you eligible for a branch as well as college change.
- To opt for locking the seat: neither the college nor the branch can then change in the further rounds.
In the further rounds in case of an upgrade from a NIT to an IIT the student will have to report again to the new RC and no new fee has to be paid as it will be transferred from the previous college.
In case of you not getting a seat in the first round, you can wait for the subsequent rounds without getting demoralized as the major changes happen around second round since students who wish to join other colleges usually get separated from the steps when payment has to be done so hold on!
Also, if at some point in time you wish to withdraw your seat you can easily apply for it at the RC after allotment. The good part is that the entire amount that was paid by you is refunded after a deduction of around Rs.1000. The refund procedure is smooth and the money is returned within 3 months in the concerned account. This completes the general JEE Advanced counseling procedure and the subsequent rounds proceed in a similar way and the withdrawal can be done after any round.
JEE Advanced Counseling: Spot Round
Spot rounds are conducted when the seats are still left vacant after the multiple counseling rounds. The students should not rely on it by seeing the cutoffs of the spot round because it takes place very late and so it is luck based to a certain extent because it depends on who all go for the spot round. Thus, there is no particular pattern followed in it and they are not very reliable as they don’t necessarily have to take place. In case you have taken admission and wish for sliding later, you can sit for the spot round, and then it won’t hurt to be a part of it.
This summarizes the entire JEE Advanced counseling procedure and I would suggest you all be patient throughout the procedure as it sometimes gets delayed too. Hope for the best but be prepared for the worst!
All the best!
