More Than Numbers

As with all medical schools, getting an admissions offer to Yale School of Medicine is more than just numbers. The medical school admissions committee will read your entire application, including your personal statement, description of activities and awards, letters of recommendation, and any additional essays required by the school. You will be evaluated based on your reasons for pursuing medicine as well as the quality and depth of your clinical, volunteer, research, and other extracurricular experiences. A good GPA and MCAT score will definitely help but they are also not everything!

Why Yale?

Given the competitiveness of the admissions process, pre-medical students must have great reasons for wanting to attend Yale. One of those reasons is the Yale System, an aspect of the program unique to all of the medical schools in the nation. The idea behind this innovation is the view that Yale medical students are mature, motivated, and self-directed individuals. Yale believes their students thrive when encouraged to cooperate with each other so the program puts in considerable effort to minimize competition among the students. As a result, there is no class ranking, the only person that knows a student’s performance on final exams is the individual student, and class attendance is optional. For pre-medical students that are tired of the competition from college, the collaborative approach of Yale can be very appealing.
