Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons (P&S) is one of the oldest medical schools in the United States. In fact, it’s been around since 1767- making it older than the US itself! Columbia was also the first medical school in the States to award the M.D. degree. Facts like this make it clear why Columbia is one of the most prestigious and sought-after medical schools in the nation. It’s also one of the most competitive med schools to get into, with Columbia MCAT scores averaging in the 97th percentile among all test takers.

Columbia University College of P&S has an average MCAT of 36 and an average GPA of 3.82. For the new MCAT, this roughly translates to a score of 518. While GPA and MCAT are two important factors for med school admissions, they’re not the only ones! Below, we’ll discuss the others.

How Can I Strengthen My Application to Columbia, Besides My GPA and MCAT Score?

You can impress the Columbia University College of P&S Admissions Committee by:

  • Collecting strong letters of recommendation from science faculty members, teachers, or research mentors
  • Engaging in a wide variety of extracurricular activities and jobs that reflect your personality and motivations for pursuing a career in medicine
  • Displaying a background of having successfully worked with a diverse group of individuals towards a common problem
  • Impressing the faculty and students during your on-campus interview

 

What Makes Columbia University College of P&S Unique?

In addition to earning an M.D., Columbia offers several degree programs that allows its students to pursue any additional health-related interests they may have. Unique to Columbia is their 3-year PhD-to-MD Program, which is offered to individuals that already have a PhD and wish to pursue biomedical research as physician scientists.

Columbia also has the P&S Club, which is actually an umbrella organization with over 70 different extracurricular clubs for its students. These clubs reflect the interests of Columbia’s medical student body and gives students an opportunity to pursue those interests. Some example organizations are: the P&S Basketball Club, Oncology Interest Society, and the Black and Latino Student Organization. Students take advantage of P&S clubs as outlets from all the studying they have to do in medical school!
