Junior Year Checklist

Junior year is stressful and confusing for everyone. There’s so much to do! If you’re unfamiliar with all of the steps of the college process, I’m here to help.

1. Standardized test prep

Junior year is when you need to pick between the SAT and ACT, and then start prepping. Start studying early to ensure you get the best score. You’ll also need to take SAT subject tests, as most schools require them. Pick your favorite/best school subjects so that you can get the highest scores possible. Lastly, you have to start studying for AP tests, which will not only look good on college applications, but can also give you course credit.

2. Teacher recommendations

Figure out which teachers would write the best recommendations for you. Pick those who know you best and will therefore have the most to say, rather than those whose names will sound the most prestigious but know nothing about you as an individual.

3. Make a college list

Start researching what colleges you might want to add to your list. Especially consider what kinds of academic opportunities they offer, their acceptance rates, and their campuses. Talk to alumni of your high school that attend these schools to get a better sense of student life.

4. Common application essay

Brainstorm ideas for your common application essay, which you should probably write over the summer. Pick unique topics that will give admissions officers the best sense of who you are as a person.
