A lot of people would agree. However, when I hear this, all I can think is \u201cwhich present\u201d? As many English teachers and English students know, there are many different ways to describe the present.<\/p>\n<p>In English, there are four present tenses: simple present, present perfect, present continuous, and present perfect continuous. These four tenses have a total of 10 different uses. In this post, we\u2019ll look at the form and uses of each tense.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/magoosh.com\/toefl\/files\/2014\/10\/TOEFL_Present-Tenses-600x226.png\" alt=\"TOEFL four present tenses-magoosh\" width=\"600\" height=\"226\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-5030\" srcset=\"https:\/\/magoosh.com\/toefl\/files\/2014\/10\/TOEFL_Present-Tenses-600x226.png 600w, https:\/\/magoosh.com\/toefl\/files\/2014\/10\/TOEFL_Present-Tenses-300x113.png 300w, https:\/\/magoosh.com\/toefl\/files\/2014\/10\/TOEFL_Present-Tenses-768x289.png 768w, https:\/\/magoosh.com\/toefl\/files\/2014\/10\/TOEFL_Present-Tenses.png 784w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>Simple Present<\/h2>\n<p><em><strong>Form:<\/strong><\/em> Use the base form of a verb, adding an \/s\/ to the end of the verb if the subject is singular. (Unless the verb is irregular, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mnliteracy.org\/sites\/default\/files\/5-6present_perfect_cd-irregular.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">in which case other rules may apply<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Uses:<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Use 1: Actions that are habitual or routine <\/em>\n<p><u>EXAMPLES:<\/u> The sun <strong>rises<\/strong>. I <strong>brush<\/strong> my teeth twice a day.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><em>Use 2: General, timeless facts<\/em>\n<p><u>EXAMPLES:<\/u> Spiders <strong>make<\/strong> webs. Babies <strong>drink<\/strong> milk.<\/li>\n<li><em>Use 3: Narrative style (used when recalling past events or announcing things that are happening in the moment)<\/em>\n<p><u>EXAMPLES:<\/u> So I <strong>go<\/strong> to the store yesterday, and the clerk <strong>says<\/strong> \u201cWe\u2019re closed!\u201d He <strong>hits<\/strong> the baseball out of the field and <strong>makes<\/strong> a home run!<\/li>\n<li><em>Use 4: The \u201creal\u201d present (things that are happening right now), but ONLY when the verb is <strong>stative<\/strong>. Stative verbs* deal with the way the subject is, instead of what the subject does. <\/em>\n<p><u>EXAMPLES:<\/u> That car <strong>looks<\/strong> old. They <strong>think<\/strong> that\u2019s a bad idea.<\/p>\n<p>*Learn more about <a href=\"http:\/\/esl.about.com\/od\/grammarstructures\/a\/g_stative.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">stative verbs<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Present Perfect<\/h2>\n<p><em><strong>Form:<\/strong><\/em> Have or has + past form of a verb<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Uses:<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Use 1: Actions that started in the past, continue into the present, and may continue into the future <\/em>\n<p><u>EXAMPLES:<\/u> The children <strong>have felt<\/strong> sick ever since they ate lunch. My neighbor <strong>has<\/strong> <strong>lived<\/strong> next door to me for two years.<\/li>\n<li><em>Use 2: Separate actions that happened in the past and may happen again in the<br \/>\nfuture<\/em><br \/>\n<u>EXAMPLES:<\/u> That man <strong>has traveled<\/strong> overseas several times. We <strong>have eaten<\/strong> at that restaurant once or twice.<\/li>\n<li><em>Use 3: Recently completed actions that still influence things happening in the present<\/em><br \/>\n<u>EXAMPLES:<\/u> The sun <strong>has risen<\/strong> and you need to wake up. They <strong>have finished<\/strong> their meeting, so now they can go.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Present Continuous<\/h2>\n<p><em><strong>Form:<\/strong><\/em> The present tense of \u201cto be\u201d (am\/is\/are)+ verb + ing<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Uses:<\/strong> <\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Use 1: The \u201creal\u201d present (things that are happening right now), for all verbs except stative verbs <\/em>\n<p><u>EXAMPLES:<\/u> I <strong>am sitting <\/strong>down right now. He can\u2019t come to the phone because he <strong>is<\/strong> <strong>working<\/strong>. You can\u2019t see the children because they <strong>are hiding<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><em>Use 2: Temporary actions that may not be happening right now, but have not yet been completed<\/em>\n<p><u>EXAMPLES:<\/u> I <strong>am taking<\/strong> an English course. The truck <strong>is being <\/strong>repaired. Plans <strong>are<\/strong> <strong>being<\/strong> made.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Present Perfect Continuous<\/h2>\n<p><em><strong>Form:<\/strong><\/em> Have or has + been + verb + ing<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Uses:<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Use 1: Actions that started in the past, continue into the present, and may continue into the future (note that this is the exact same use and meaning as Use 1 of present perfect)<\/em>\n<p><u>EXAMPLES:<\/u> The children <strong>have been feeling<\/strong> sick ever since they ate lunch. My neighbor <strong>has been living<\/strong> next door to me for two years.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>What a long and winding road!
