It\u2019s an important part of relationships and every day conversation. So, in the following lesson, you will learn how to give advice in English using the modal verbs \u201cshould\u201d and \u201cwould\u201d and the structure \u201cwhy don\u2019t&#8230;?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Our advice right now is to get your notebook and pen ready so you can learn as much as possible. Use our explanations to create sentences of your own. Share them in the comments section, and we can help you with any questions.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Should<\/h2>\n<p>We use \u201cshould\u201d to give advice both in the present and in the past using the following structures:<\/p>\n<p><strong>subject + should + main verb<\/strong> (in the present)<\/p>\n<p>and<\/p>\n<p><strong>should + have + past participle<\/strong> (in the past)<\/p>\n<p><em>For example:<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">\u201cThey <strong>should<\/strong> <strong>study<\/strong> more if they want to pass their exams.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">\u201cThey <strong>should<\/strong> <strong>have studied<\/strong> more if they wanted to pass their exams.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We can also use \u201c<strong>should + not<\/strong>\u201d to give advice on not doing something. The contraction is \u201c<strong>shouldn\u2019t<\/strong>\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><em>For example: <\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">\u201cYou <strong>should<\/strong> <strong>not<\/strong> smoke; it\u2019s so bad for you!\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">\u201cYou <strong>shouldn\u2019t<\/strong> have partied so much before the exams.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Would<\/h2>\n<p>When we give advice using \u201cwould\u201d, we are putting ourselves in the other person\u2019s shoes. This means that we are giving hypothetical advice as if we were the listener, which is why we often say \u201cif I were you\u201d at the start of the sentence.<\/p>\n<p><em>For example: <\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">\u201cIf I were you, I <strong>would<\/strong> choose the salad.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We can also use \u201c<strong>would + not<\/strong>\u201d, or the contracted form \u201c<strong>wouldn\u2019t<\/strong>\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><em>For example: <\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">\u201cI <strong>would<\/strong> <strong>not<\/strong> go out at night without my friends.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">\u201cI <strong>wouldn\u2019t<\/strong> go shopping at the mall now; it will be full of people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Why don\u2019t&#8230;?<\/h2>\n<p>First of all, remember that in order to form questions in English, we put the question word and the auxiliary before the subject.<\/p>\n<p>To give advice, we use \u201cwhy don\u2019t\u201d together with the second person (you).<\/p>\n<p><em>For example: <\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">\u201c<strong>Why don\u2019t<\/strong> <strong>you<\/strong> ask her to get married?\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">\u201cIf you\u2019re sick, <strong>why don\u2019t<\/strong> <strong>you<\/strong> go to the doctor?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>If you use \u201cwhy don\u2019t\u201d followed by the first person plural (we), we are no longer giving advice but giving suggestions.<\/p>\n<p><em>For example:<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">\u201c<strong>Why don\u2019t we<\/strong> go another day?\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">\u201c<strong>Why don\u2019t we<\/strong> go and get a pizza?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And there you have it!
