In today\u2019s post, we are going to focus on the\u00a0<\/span><b>use of gerunds in English after an adjective and a preposition<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gerunds after prepositions<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In english if we have a verb coming straight\u00a0<\/span><em>after<\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0a preposition,\u00a0<\/span><b>we must always use the verb in gerund form<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The good thing to know about this rule is that it has absolutely\u00a0<\/span>zero exceptions<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, making it one of the few in English.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Examples:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He went crazy\u00a0<\/span><em>on hearing<\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0the news<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I\u2019m looking forward\u00a0<\/span><em>to going<\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0on holiday<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I always dream<em>\u00a0<\/em><\/span><em>about winning<\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0the lottery<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As we can see in all of these examples, the verb in gerund form comes straight after the preposition. The structure is very easy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What happens if there is an adjective preceding the preposition?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In English there are many examples of gerunds being used\u00a0<\/span>after an adjective and a preposition<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0structure.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Examples:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He is\u00a0<\/span><em>famous for playing<\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0football<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They are\u00a0<\/span><em>bored of doing<\/em><b>\u00a0<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nothing<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They are<\/span><b>\u00a0<\/b><em>proud of having<\/em><b>\u00a0<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">worked hard<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They are<\/span><b>\u00a0<\/b><em>tired of working<\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0a lot<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As can be seen from the examples, the structure is:<\/span><b>\u00a0adjective + preposition + gerund.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What are the most important factors to bear in mind?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When we use verbs in gerund form in English, it is absolutely paramount to remember that directly after any preposition,\u00a0<\/span><b>the verb will always be in gerund form<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This is a crystal clear rule and will help you in your studies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is also important to remember that it is impossible to remember every eventuality at the beginning. It is important to learn the examples little by little.
