Of these three, <em>inter-<\/em> may be the hardest. This prefix appears in a lot of advanced vocabulary words. And it\u2019s used in ways that don\u2019t point to the meaning of a word very clearly, compared to easier prefixes like <em>de-<\/em> and <em>dis<\/em>-.<\/p>\n<p>So to help you understand this prefix even better, I\u2019m going to first show you a comic strip conversation where <em>inter-<\/em> is used in context. Read the comic strip and think carefully about what <em>inter-<\/em> really means. Review the two <a href=\"https:\/\/magoosh.com\/toefl\/magoosh-comics-prefixes-de-dis-and-inter\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">previous<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/magoosh.com\/toefl\/prefixes-de-dis-and-inter-on-the-toefl\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">posts<\/a> if need be.<\/p>\n<p>Then go through the reading passage at the bottom of this post. That passage contains many <em>inter-<\/em> vocabulary words. Look at the vocabulary in <strong>bold <\/strong>closely. What do these words have in common? Why do they contain <em>inter-<\/em>? Can you guess the meaning of unfamiliar words in <strong>bold<\/strong>, based on context and on their prefix itslef? For even greater understanding, check your guesses with a dictionary.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>COMIC STRIP:<\/h2>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2965 size-large aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/magoosh-company-site\/wp-content\/uploads\/toefl\/files\/2016\/03\/07064833\/mc-ri_im1-600x733.gif\" alt=\"mc-ri_im1\" width=\"600\" height=\"733\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>READING PASSAGE:<\/h2>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">I was preparing for a job <strong>interview<\/strong>, and I used some <strong>interactive<\/strong> software that made it seem like I was talking to someone who might hire me for a new job. The technology was <strong>interesting<\/strong>, but it didn\u2019t really help me with <strong>interpersonal <\/strong>skills. It always felt like I was just talking to a machine. And then when I went to the real interview, it was completely different from the computer experience! The practice interview on the computer was very short\u2014just a few minutes. And <strong>intermittently<\/strong> the interview experience would stop and the computer screen would show me advice on what to say next.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">The real job interview couldn\u2019t be <strong>interrupted<\/strong> in that way. It was also much longer than a few minutes. This job interview lasted almost three hours! I had to talk to more than one person too. I was questioned by an <strong>interdepartmental<\/strong> panel of managers. The interview process was so long it had an <strong>intermission<\/strong> where we took a break for donuts and coffee.
