Here&#8217;s an example:<\/p>\n<p><em>He hit the ball to Mary.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The verb is &#8220;hit&#8221; and the subject is &#8220;he.&#8221; What did he hit? He hit the ball &#8211; that&#8217;s our direct object, the ball. Who is receiving the ball (or the direct object) in this sentence? Mary.
