And because the TOEFL is a test of communication, it <\/span><b>can<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> cause a problem and hurt your grade. But in order to understand whether stuttering will affect you, we need to think about the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">type<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of stuttering.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"TOEFL Tuesday: Does Stuttering Hurt Your Score?\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/hqKPOmCaNcY?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h1><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is It Diagnosed by a Doctor?<\/span><\/h1>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If a doctor has diagnosed you with <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.asha.org\/public\/speech\/disorders\/AdultSandL.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a communication disorder,<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> you may be allowed to have extra time to answer TOEFL speaking questions. This depends heavily on the evidence you can give, and it will only be possible for people who have serious trouble communicating even in their own language\u2014not just in English. But if you stutter very strongly in your own language, and a doctor will fill out <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ets.org\/s\/disabilities\/pdf\/bulletin_supplement_test_takers_with_disabilities_health_needs.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the forms that ETS requires,<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> you may get that extra time. In that case, the stutter will not hurt your score.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h1><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Are You Just Uncertain?<\/span><\/h1>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If your stuttering happens only when you\u2019re speaking English, then that\u2019s definitely not going to get you extra time. But more importantly, it\u2019s an indication of something else; if you need to stop and think about which word you want to use or how your sentence should be structured, then you probably just need more practice speaking English. And that type of hesitation and stuttering, caused by uncertainty, <\/span><b>can<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> hurt your speaking score.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h1><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Does it Hurt Communication?<\/span><\/h1>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most test takers stutter a little bit sometimes. I don\u2019t want to imply that all stuttering hurts scores. Some repetition of a word or sound is normal. The key is communication. If you repeat one word two or three times, the listener will still understand you perfectly fine. If you repeat <\/span><b>every<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> word two or three times, they won\u2019t. Or more commonly, if you start a sentence three times, in three different ways, the listener may not understand.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But if you only stutter and repeat yourself a bit\u2014say two or three times in the minute of your answer\u2014then don\u2019t worry about it! A bit of repetition is normal.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h1><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Still not sure?<\/span><\/h1>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re in the middle, with more than normal stuttering but less than a diagnosed communication disorder, then there\u2019s one simple piece of advice I can give: <\/span><b>slow down.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Usually, students who hesitate and stutter a lot are worried about the time, and they try to speak too quickly. The truth is that the clock in the TOEFL speaking section gives you enough time to give a full answer at a normal, relaxed speed. The more you worry about speed, the more problems you have. Instead, focus on structuring your answer and speaking clearly and calmly. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This takes practice! But if you learn the types of questions in the speaking section, including how to structure your answers in response, you will be more comfortable on test day.
