Students who have trouble with notes will have trouble on not only the Listening section, but also on the Speaking and Writing sections.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So the three tips below are <\/span><b>big<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. If you\u2019re not already doing them, they can really affect your TOEFL score.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"TOEFL Tuesday: 3 Tips for Better Listening Notes\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/0ObB_n-g2vE?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tip 1: Only the Main Ideas, Examples, and Reasons<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You don\u2019t need to write everything you hear. You want to be more focused on <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">listening<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, not writing. That means you should only write the main ideas and key details. The most common types of key details are examples and reasons.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So if a professor is talking about the different types of clouds, you will want to note the names of each types of clouds, and the definitions. When the professor describes the clouds, and gives examples of what they look like, you will want that information. But when the professor says the number of miles over the ground that a type of cloud usually appears at, that\u2019s probably not key information. Numbers are specifics\u2014they are not the types of big details you should note.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tip 2: Listen Then Write<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I don\u2019t mean that you should listen to the whole lecture or conversation before you write your notes. Of course, you should take notes <\/span><b>during <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the listening! But you should write the main ideas after you hear them. If you try to write what the professor or students says <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">while <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">they are talking, you won\u2019t be able to decide what\u2019s important. That means everything you note will be something that was said a moment in the <\/span><b>past<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, not what you\u2019re hearing at that exact moment.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tip 3: Shorten Everything!<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You are the only person who needs to understand your notes, and you only need to understand them for a couple minutes. That means they can be <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">very<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> hard to understand, and that\u2019s okay! Shorten every word. Instead of writing \u201cstudent,\u201d write \u201cstud.\u201d or just \u201cS.\u201d Use symbols, too. Instead of writing the word \u201cdown,\u201d draw a small downward arrow. Show relationships with lines and arrows, not with words. Draw small simple pictures if they\u2019re faster! Everything should be as short and fast as possible\u2014trust your memory to help you understand it after, and never correct a mistake by erasing or rewriting. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>I hope you enjoyed the video.
