As I mentioned before, \u201cunless\u201d usually is a substitute for \u201cexcept if\u201d or \u201cif not.\u201d When \u201cunless\u201d is used as a substitute in an \u201cif\u201d sentence, the two sentences have the same meaning. \u201cI will <strong>not<\/strong> call her <strong>if<\/strong> she calls me first\u201d is the same as \u201cI will call her <strong>except if<\/strong> she calls me first,\u201d and \u201cI will call her <strong>unless <\/strong>she calls me first,\u201d for example.<\/p>\n<p>There are other ways that <strong>unless<\/strong> and <strong>if<\/strong> can be used together, instead of being substitutes for each other. For instance, in a conversation, one person could suggest a course of action <strong>if<\/strong> something else happens. Another person could disagree, saying <strong>not<\/strong> to do that thing <strong>unless <\/strong>a certain condition is met. This can be seen in the following comic.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2620 size-large aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/magoosh.com\/toefl\/files\/2015\/12\/mc-uuait_img1-600x262.gif\" alt=\"mc-uuait_img1\" width=\"600\" height=\"262\" srcset=\"https:\/\/magoosh.com\/toefl\/files\/2015\/12\/mc-uuait_img1-600x262.gif 600w, https:\/\/magoosh.com\/toefl\/files\/2015\/12\/mc-uuait_img1-300x131.gif 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Unless <\/strong>and <strong>if<\/strong> can also be used to ask for confirmation of a fact. When one person makes an <strong>if<\/strong> statement<strong>, <\/strong>another person might rephrase the statement as an <strong>unless<\/strong> question. (Or vice-versa.) You can see that here:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2621 size-large aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/magoosh.com\/toefl\/files\/2015\/12\/mc-uuait_img2-600x261.gif\" alt=\"mc-uuait_img2\" width=\"600\" height=\"261\" srcset=\"https:\/\/magoosh.com\/toefl\/files\/2015\/12\/mc-uuait_img2-600x261.gif 600w, https:\/\/magoosh.com\/toefl\/files\/2015\/12\/mc-uuait_img2-300x130.gif 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>If<\/strong> and <strong>unless<\/strong> can also be used together by a single speaker or writer, to restate and reinforce an important idea.
