This blog already has <a href=\"https:\/\/magoosh.com\/toefl\/introduction-to-relativizers\/\">a few<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/magoosh.com\/toefl\/hard-relativizers-that-which-who-and-whom\/\">lessons<\/a> on relativizers. A lot of students find it especially hard to use the relativizers \u201cwho\u201d and \u201cwhom\u201d correctly. Recently, one of my students asked me if I could explain \u201cwho\u201d and \u201cwhom\u201d a little more in-depth here on the blog.<\/p>\n<p>Who\/whom follow somewhat different rules when they are used in statements and when they appear in questions. This post will focus on the use of these two relativizers in statements. Below is a chart of the statement rules for who\/whom.<u><\/u><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Chart: Who vs. Whom in Statements<\/h2>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1975\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/magoosh-company-site\/wp-content\/uploads\/toefl\/files\/2015\/07\/01234823\/wwvwis_img1.png\" alt=\"wwvwis_img1\" width=\"632\" height=\"339\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Read that chart carefully. Then do the sentence creation activities below. Be as creative as you can. Experiment with a variety of sentence structures for statements. For each task, I\u2019ve given you example sentences to help get you started. Each example sentence includes a brief explanation of the sentence structure. You do NOT have to write explanations of sentence structure in your own answers. (Unless you really want to. \ud83d\ude09 )<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Chart Activity 1:<\/h2>\n<p>1) Write two <strong>FORMAL SENTENCES<\/strong> where \u201cwho\u201d is used as the subject of a sentence or clause.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Example answers:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The man who gets the most votes becomes president. <em>(\u201cWho\u201d is the subject of the clause \u201cwho gets the most votes.\u201d)<\/em><\/li>\n<li>I don\u2019t know who is arriving.<em> (Who is the subject of the clause \u201cwho is arriving.\u201d)<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>2) Write two <strong>FORMAL SENTENCES<\/strong> where \u201cwhom\u201d is used as the object of the verb.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Example answers:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The advertising executive whom I spoke to yesterday assured me that the company had approved the new advertising campaign. <em>(\u201cWhom\u201d is the object of the phrasal verb \u201cspoke to.\u201d)<\/em><\/li>\n<li>That is the woman whom I will meet tonight.<em> (\u201cWhom\u201d is the object of the verb \u201cmeet.\u201d)<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>3) Write two <strong>INFORMAL SENTENCES<\/strong> where \u201cwho\u201d is the object of the verb.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Example answers:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>My mother, who I spoke to this morning, was very happy. <em>(\u201cWho\u201d is the object of the phrasal verb \u201cspoke to.\u201d)<\/em><\/li>\n<li>That\u2019s the football team who the crowd cheered last night. <em>(\u201cWho\u201d is the object of the verb \u201ccheered.\u201d)<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>4) Write one <strong>FORMAL SENTENCE<\/strong> where \u201cwho\u201d is the subject of a sentence or clause, and \u201cwhom\u201d is the object of the verb.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Example answer:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>I don\u2019t know who visited their house, or whom they visited. <em>(\u201cWho\u201d is the subject of the clause \u201cwho visited their house.\u201d \u201cWhom\u201d is the object of the verb \u201cvisited.\u201d)<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>5) Write one <strong>FORMAL SENTENCE<\/strong> where \u201cwhom\u201d is used as the object of a preposition and as the object of a verb.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Example answer:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The people whom I will address today are not the same people with whom I spoke yesterday. <em>(The first \u201cwhom\u201d is the object of the verb \u201caddress.\u201d The second \u201cwhom\u201d is the object of the preposition \u201cwith.\u201d)<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>6) Write one <strong>INFORMAL SENTENCE<\/strong> where \u201cwho\u201d is used as the object of a verb and also as the subject of a sentence or clause.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Example answer:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The supervisor who I report to is also the supervisor who makes the most important decisions. <em>(The first \u201cwho\u201d is the object of the phrasal verb \u201creport to.\u201d The second \u201cwho\u201d is the subject of the clause \u201cwho makes the most important decisions.\u201d)<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>7) Write one <strong>INFORMAL SENTENCE<\/strong> where \u201cwho\u201d is the subject of a sentence or clause, and \u201cwhom\u201d is the object of a preposition.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Example answer:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The person who invented the computer is a genius to whom everyone should be thankful. <em>(\u201cWho\u201d is the subject of the clause \u201cwho invented the computer.\u201d \u201cWhom\u201d is the object of the preposition \u201cto.\u201d)<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Doing your own sentences in the activities above can really help you master the use of \u201cwho\u201d and \u201cwhom\u201d in English. But if you\u2019re pressed for time, just carefully read the chart and the example sentences above. You\u2019ll find everything you need to know about \u201cwho\u201d\u201d and \u201cwhom\u201d in statements.
