Milk and Economic Development: No Use Crying<\/a><\/strong>
\n From\u00a0The Economist\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

This article presents the idea that the ability to digest milk may explain how Europe got rich.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

First, let me be clear about my personal opinion: I don\u2019t think it\u2019s a very good idea to look for genetic reasons for Europe\u2019s historical wealth. The reasons that Europe became wealthy are very many, and very complicated, I imagine. That said, this month\u2019s article is a very short, interesting read, and it alone is not harmful. Plus it\u2019s great as TOEFL Reading practice<\/a>. And that\u2019s the point!<\/p>\n

The general topics (European history, biology) are common TOEFL topics, and the vocabulary is at a challenging, academic level. It\u2019s actually a bit more difficult than an average TOEFL text, but that makes for good practice. <\/p>\n

Here are some vocabulary words you need for the article:<\/p>\n

migration<\/b> = moving from one place to live in another place<\/p>\n

composition <\/b>= what something is made of<\/p>\n

proportion<\/b> = the size of a part compared to the size of the whole<\/p>\n

tolerance<\/b> = ability to accept and not fight against<\/p>\n

estimate<\/b> = guess (a number) using some information<\/p>\n

(pre-)colonial<\/b> = of the time when European people started trying to control the Americas, Africa, Australia, and Asia<\/p>\n

incidence<\/b> = how common or uncommon something bad (like disease) is<\/p>\n

extract<\/b> = take out; take from<\/p>\n

infrastructure<\/b> = roads, electricity, water, and other things needed for a city<\/p>\n

innovation<\/b> \u00a0= creating new things<\/p>\n
