What is the subject?
The subject of a sentence is the person, place, thing, or idea that is doing something in the sentence. It’s the what or who that “verb”-ed.
Examples of subjects
Here’s an example sentence:
The boy ate the hotdog.
- What is the verb in this sentence? In this case, the verb is “ate.”
- Who ate the hotdog? The boy.
- So, the person who did something in the sentence (ate), is the boy. “The boy” is the subject of the sentence.
Can you find the subject in the following two sentences?
Mary and Sam went to San Francisco.
Soccer is very popular at my school.
