Princeton’s TOEFL Requirements for Undergraduates

Here’s what Princeton has to say about English language requirements for undergrads:

If English is not your native language and you are attending a school where English is not the language of instruction, you must take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). The TOEFL score must be reported by the testing agency to Princeton, in addition to the scores of the SAT or ACT, and two SAT Subject Tests. Students who have attended an English-medium secondary school for at least three years are not required to submit TOEFL results.

So, yes, you will have to take the TOEFL to be admitted to Princeton as an undergrad, unless English is your native language or you’ve attended an English-speaking school for 3 or more years.

Princeton’s TOEFL Requirements for Graduate Students

Princeton’s requirements are pretty strict for graduate students, and the university holds its non-native speakers to very high standards.

You must submit a TOEFL or IELTS score if:

  • your native language is not English.
  • your native language is not English and you have earned a master’s degree in the US, the UK, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, or English-speaking Canada
  • your native language is not English but you transferred to a university in the US, the UK, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, or English-speaking Canada

If you’re not a native English speaker, then you will most likely have to take the TOEFL or IELTS. There is one exception though: if you earned your bachelor’s degree or PhD in the US, the UK, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, or English-speaking Canada.

But, there’s an exception to this exception! The following countries list English as an official language, however, earning a bachelor’s degree in one of these countries does not exempt you from the TOEFL/IELTS requirements: India, Pakistan, the Philippines, Hong Kong, Nigeria, and Singapore.

Minimum Score Required for Admission

There is no minimum score required for undergrad admissions.

The Graduate School at Princeton also does not have a minimum TOEFL score requirement, due to “the nature of the graduate admission process.” However, if you score below a 28 on the Speaking section, you will be required to take an English placement test when you arrive on campus. If you don’t pass the test, you’ll have to enroll in English Language classes.
