How to Reschedule Your TOEFL

magoosh_clockSometimes, plans change. Maybe you don’t feel ready to take the TOEFL, maybe you’re incredibly sick, or maybe something came up and you’re no longer able to make it to your scheduled test date. What do you need to know about rescheduling your TOEFL? Find out in this post!

How to Reschedule Your TOEFL

You can only reschedule online or by phone. You cannot reschedule by mail, email or at the test center.

If you want to reschedule online, you’ll need to log in to your TOEFL iBT account, click on “View Order(s)” on your home page, and click “Modify” on the Order Summary page.

If you’d prefer to reschedule by phone, you can find the phone number from your testing center here. You will need to provide your registration number and full name to reschedule the test date.

How much does it cost?

There is a $60 fee to reschedule, and this must be paid before you can register for a new date.

When do I need to reschedule by?

You have up to 4 full days before your test to change your test date.

Is it cheaper to reschedule or to cancel?

Here’s what ETS has to say about a cancellation fee:

If you cancel your registration before the four-day deadline, you will be refunded half of the original test fee you paid. No refunds are given for other services.

The registration fees vary by country (you can find your country’s fee here), but in the US, the fee is $190. So, if you cancel your date altogether, you’ll lose $95. If you reschedule, you’ll have to pay $60. In the US, that means it is much cheaper to reschedule than to cancel, but this will vary by country!

Should you reschedule or cancel?

Since it’s cheaper in most countries to reschedule, this is a better option if you know for certain that you do want to take the test. However, if your plans changed so much that you no longer need to take the TOEFL, then of course you should cancel. 🙂

I am facing a problem. I had my toefl test on 29th august and scored 111. After I came back from my test, I had no idea how much would I score. So I booked again for the test of 19th september. However, now I want to cancel it. I followed the procedure given on ets toefl site and i cancelled the order. But the next time I login, it still shows that the test is scheduled. I also tried calling the regional office they mentioned, but they are not picking up my calls. I even tried sending a mail to the prometric, but received no reply. Can you please tell me what should I do to ensure my test is cancelled?

      Hi Darshana,

Did you receive a confirmation email that you successfully cancelled your test date? If so, that should be good proof if ETS tries to deny you the refund.

Unfortunately, the best approach is to try to email ETS again. You could also try contacting them on Facebook or Twitter if they don’t respond!

Hello, I have a issue. I registered TOEFL test on December 3rd, but now I want to reschedule it to around April. Can I do that? Or I can only change it to iJanuary or February which is closer to the test date?

Magoosh Test Prep Expert November 8, 2016 at 9:52 am #

Registering a rescheduled exam for April will not be possible. You can register for the TOEFL a maximum of 4 months in advance, and you can only reschedule an exam 4 days before it’s initially scheduled. 4 days before December 3 is November 30th, and 4 months after November 30th is late March, not early April. You may want to consider a late march reschedule instead, if possible.

      Hi Hai Xing,

You should be able to reschedule your exam to any date as long as the dates are available. I recommend going online or calling in to inquiry about potential dates as soon as possible. Good luck!

      Hi there,

This is an issue that you should discuss with ETS. We are a test prep company, but have no affiliation with ETS and we don’t control the website itself! I recommend that you contact ETS directly: Good luck!

P.S. I deleted the personal identifying information from your message.

I have scheduled my Toefl test for today May the 6th. I had a hard time to find the testing center, even I arrived there 1 hour before the test. I was late 20 minutes, and the lady who was in charge, told me to reschedule the test and to cal ETS. I have tried to reschedule the test online, but it is not giving me an option to do that. I am really disappointed and I will try to call ETS on Monday. 😢

      Hi Eva,

I’m so sorry to hear about this negative testing experience! I know it’s frustrating to be ready for a test and then not be able to take it! I hope that you can reschedule with ETS. This is an important reminder, however, of how important it is to have a plan for test day. Each student should map a route to the testing center and make sure to arrive as early as possible. Good luck, and I hope you can get this figured out!

        Hi there,

We are not affiliated with ETS so I’m afraid we don’t have any special way to contact them. Here is the information for you to contact ETS in India:

Please note that rescheduling after the exam is only permitted in certain circumstances like a medical emergency.

    Dear Mr/Mrs

Hello i am Yohannes, i need to take the TOEFL pbt exam for April 2018. At this time i am going to register the exam in Eritrea testing center. Under some situation i am going to Sudan in the next 3 months . so if i cant reach at the exam date in to my country. By changing the testing center, may i take the test in Sudan.

    • David Recine
      David Recine June 27, 2017 at 7:43 am #

Yes, you can. However, when you change test centers, you may also need to change you date. This is because another test center in another country may or may not have openings on the same day you originally planned to take the test.

Still, you can definitely take the test in a different country, if you’re not able to get back to Eritrea during the general time period of your scheduled TOEFL. This can be done through ETS’s official page for changing TOEFL PBT registration. Hope this helps, and I wish you good travels in Sudan.

  9. Akul December 15, 2017 at 10:32 am #

Hi, I missed the deadline for cancellation. Isn’t it possible to cancel now? I am fine with 0 refund. If it’s impossible to cancel, will it show a score of “0” on the results page?

    • Magoosh Test Prep Expert
Magoosh Test Prep Expert December 16, 2017 at 10:19 am #

      Hi Akul,

You can cancel your TOEFL test up to 4 days before the test and get half of your registration fee returned. If it’s within four days of the test, you can cancel with no refund. You can also cancel at the testing center after taking the test (no refund). Cancelled tests will not appear on your score report. You can also reschedule the test for $60, which is the cheaper option if you know when you want to take the TOEFL 🙂

  10. Racel December 15, 2017 at 4:49 pm #

Hi, so I wasn’t able to take my toel test today due to a typhoon. Is it possible to reschedule without additional fee since inclement weather is out of my control?

    • Magoosh Test Prep Expert
Magoosh Test Prep Expert December 16, 2017 at 10:23 am #

      Hi Racel,

Oh no! Sorry to hear about this–I hope you and your family and safe and sound! You will have to contact ETS directly about this, and read about their policies here. Natural disasters should be covered under “testing irregularities” and ETS might allow you to reschedule the test for no charge, but it is up to their discretion what counts as a natural disaster. I recommend that you contact them directly as soon as possible!

  11. Lisa February 12, 2018 at 3:48 am #

I had cancelled my Toefl test four days before the test, which was on January 9, 2018, and it showed me it was cancelled. So I didn’t check it again. So now it’s one month later and I still haven’t received my refund. So I looked at my order and there was no cancellation written on there. I didn’t take ane screenshot, so theoretically I have no evidence that I cancelled it at all. Is it still possible to get a refund now?

      Hi Lisa,

I’m sorry to hear about this issue! I’m afraid that I don’t have any extra insight into this process than you do–I recommend that you contact ETS directly and ask about your options. If it showed up as canceled in their system, they may have a record of it. Good luck!

  12. Barnabas February 21, 2018 at 1:40 am #

I’m having my TOEFL February 24th, 10am. Will it be possible for the time to be adjusted to a later time that same day. I perceived that I might not be able to meet up with that time.

    • David Recine
      David Recine February 21, 2018 at 10:36 am #

It is possible to reschedule your TOEFL for the same time, but different day. This sometimes requires changing test centers as well, if your own test center doesn’t have an alternate time slot for you. You can change the location of the test when you reschedule, if necessary.

  13. Safa April 21, 2018 at 7:15 am #

i missed my toefl exam today! can i register for a new ecasm right away? also do i get score 0 on my profile?

    • David Recine
      David Recine April 21, 2018 at 12:42 pm #

Sorry to hear about this! 🙁 But I do have some good news. First off, don’t worry, if you miss the exam entirely, there will simply be no record that you took the exam. Second, because it’s like you didn’t take the exam at all, you can register for a new exam right away, and take the test as soon as a session is available.

      Hi Lama,

I would recommend that you reach out to ETS directly in order to find the answer to this question. You would need to change test centers. I recommend that you contact ETS directly and ask them about the process for changing test centers. Good luck!

  15. Aman Chokshi July 6, 2018 at 9:00 pm #

Hi. When I reached the test center, I realized that I didn’t have the proper identification required to write the TOEFL test in India. They only accept passports, and mine was stuck at the embassy. Since I totally missed the test, do I have to wait the required 12 days before retaking the test? Or can I take the next available test?

    • David Recine
      David Recine July 10, 2018 at 7:45 pm #

What an unusual and frustrating situation, Aman! This situation is unusual enough that I’m honestly not sure what the answer is. I’m especially hesitant to give you a concrete answer because policies on this can vary a little, depending on the country. My advice is that you contact TOEFL Customer service and double check with them. It definitely seems possible that you may not have to wait the full 12 days. Good luck to you, and if you get a chance, I would love it if you’d come back to the comments here and let us know what TOEFL customer service ultimately tells you.

I received a phone call from ets yesterday. The stuff said my next exam is canceled and told me they will email me later. But I have not received any email so far about the cancel thing nor any announcement on the website. The stuff told me that I can reschedule online or by phone. Do I need to wait for the email or reschedule my test now?

      Hi Ashley,

This certainly seems like a confusing situation! First, I recommend that you search through your junk and spam folder on your email to see if their message ended up there. You should also log onto your account and see what it says–there may be instructions or other information there. Before doing anything else, contact ETS directly to get further instructions. Good luck!
