They have no vertices and they are best friends with a weird number called pi.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">You\u2019re probably familiar with the two most commonly used formulas relating to circles &#8212; the area and circumference formulas. Just in case, here\u2019s a reminder:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Circumference:<\/strong> C=2\u03c0<em>r<\/em> or <em>d\u03c0<\/em>, where <em>r<\/em> is the length of the radius and <em>d<\/em> is the length of the diameter.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Area:<\/strong> A = \u03c0<em>r<\/em>\u00b2<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">If any of the above terms don\u2019t ring a bell, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/magoosh.com\/sat\/act\/act-math-how-to-solve-circle-problems\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">review the parts of a circle<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> before reading on, because you\u2019ll need to know some circle terms.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">All good? Great; let\u2019s forge ahead!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Once you get into coordinate geometry, another equation joins the party; it is known as the Equation of a Circle. I know, shocking. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This equation gives you information about a circle which allows you to map it onto a coordinate plane. It can also help you solve problems that ask about the position of a circle on a graph or in relation to other things, like lines and parabolas.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>The equation:<\/h2>\n<p><strong>(<em>x<\/em> \u2013 <em>h<\/em>)\u00b2 + (<em>y<\/em> \u2013 <em>k<\/em>)\u00b2 = <em>r<\/em>\u00b2<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2>The parts:<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Alright, so let\u2019s break down what this all means. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The <strong>x<\/strong> and <strong>y<\/strong> will always be there. They are the variables in this equation. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The point <strong>(<em>h<\/em>,<em>k<\/em>)<\/strong> is the center of the circle.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The <strong><em>r<\/em><\/strong> stands for the length of the radius of the circle.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">And that\u2019s it, folks. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2>How to use it<\/h2>\n<p>There are two major uses for this equation: graphing a circle and determining if a given point is on a circle.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Let\u2019s take a look at an example of the former.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Example:<\/strong> (<em>x<\/em> \u2013 4)\u00b2<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0+ (<em>y<\/em> \u2013 3)\u00b2<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0= 16<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">So what can we tell from this? First, the center of the circle is located at (4,3) on the graph. Second, the length of the radius is 4 because the square root of 16 is 4. We could now graph five points on the graph, one at the center, and four at the north, south, east, and west points of the circle by counting five points in each direction. We&#8217;ve done that on the graph below, and you can see that both the center of the circle and the radius match up with the numbers we found from the equation. The rest of the circle is sketched in.<\/span><br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-7633\" src=\"https:\/\/magoosh.com\/sat\/files\/2016\/07\/Equation-of-a-Circle1-1-300x248.jpg\" alt=\"Equation of a Circle\" width=\"300\" height=\"248\" srcset=\"https:\/\/magoosh.com\/sat\/files\/2016\/07\/Equation-of-a-Circle1-1-300x248.jpg 300w, https:\/\/magoosh.com\/sat\/files\/2016\/07\/Equation-of-a-Circle1-1-768x634.jpg 768w, https:\/\/magoosh.com\/sat\/files\/2016\/07\/Equation-of-a-Circle1-1-600x495.jpg 600w, https:\/\/magoosh.com\/sat\/files\/2016\/07\/Equation-of-a-Circle1-1.jpg 1600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">You can also use this equation to test if a given point is on a circle.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Example:<\/strong>\u00a0Take the point\u00a0(8, 3), which is graphed above.<\/p>\n<p>If we\u00a0plug it into the equation for the <em><strong>x<\/strong><\/em> and <strong><em>y<\/em>, <\/strong>we get<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>the following:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">(8\u00a0\u2013 4)\u00b2<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0+ (3 \u2013 3)\u00b2<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0= 16<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">4\u00b2<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0+ 0\u00b2<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0= 16\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">16 = 16<\/p>\n<p>Hooray! The point is indeed on the circle.<\/p>\n<h2>Last notes<\/h2>\n<p>Of course, there are tricky moments to watch out for. Take the following equation:<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">(<em>x<\/em> +2)\u00b2<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0+ (<em>y<\/em> + 5)\u00b2<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0= 6<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Notice that the numbers representing the <em><strong>h<\/strong><\/em> and <em><strong>k<\/strong><\/em> are being added to the <strong><em>x<\/em><\/strong> and<strong><em> y<\/em><\/strong>, which actually means they are both negative and the center of the circle is (-2, -5).
