Oh, pronouns. They are so simple, and yet can be so tricky, especially pronouns on the SAT. Even if you haven\u2019t had a grammar lesson in years, you probably remember what a pronoun is, but just in case, let\u2019s refresh.<\/span><\/p>\n Pronouns replace nouns in our writing\u00a0and help us avoid repetition of the same nouns over and over. Nouns themselves are versatile and can be used in different ways. As a result, there are many types of pronouns, each with its own purpose.<\/span><\/p>\n These are the classic pronouns. \u00a0Of all the types, they appear the most in our speech and writing and are the ones most often used incorrectly. <\/span><\/p>\n Subjective pronouns replace nouns that are the subjects of their sentences<\/span>: I, We, You, It, He, She, They, Who, Whoever<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n Objective pronouns replace the objects of sentences, which are the nouns that are being acted upon instead of doing something themselves<\/span>: Me, Us, You, It, Him, Her, Them, Whom, Whomever<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n Example 1:<\/strong> Tim and I ate chicken noodle soup for lunch.<\/span><\/p>\n Example 2:<\/strong> The artist painted a portrait of my dog and me.<\/span><\/p>\n Both of the examples above use pronouns correctly: the first uses \u201cI\u201d as part of the subject eating soup and the second uses \u201cme\u201d as part of the object being painted. If these compound subjects or objects tend to confuse you, try reading the sentence with only one of the subjects or objects at a time. That usually makes it easier to spot if anything is wrong.<\/span><\/p>\n Notice that\u00a0“you” and “it” work as both subjective and objective pronouns.<\/p>\n These pronouns are used when the noun they represent owns something.<\/span><\/p>\n Some only appear directly before the item they possess<\/span>: My, Her, Your, Their, Its<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n Others can be used without clarification of what they possess<\/span>: Mine, Hers, Yours, Theirs, His<\/em><\/span><\/p>\nSubjective Pronouns vs Objective Pronouns on the SAT<\/h2>\n
