How can general educators and special educators work together successfully?<\/p>\n<h2>Stop Worrying about \u201cTurf\u201d<\/h2>\n<p>\u201cTurf\u201d is cited as one of the biggest sticking points when general educators and special educators are figuring out how to work together. There is an outdated view of children with special needs \u201cbelonging\u201d to the special educator and the children who are typically developing \u201cbelonging\u201d to the general educator. So if you are tempted to get possessive over \u201cyour\u201d kids or \u201cyour\u201d teaching ideas: stop, collaborate, and listen.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/magoosh.com\/praxis\/files\/2016\/07\/6953416198_213c311042_z.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-936\" src=\"https:\/\/magoosh.com\/praxis\/files\/2016\/07\/6953416198_213c311042_z-267x300.jpg\" alt=\"How General Educators and Special Educators Can Work Together -Magoosh\" width=\"232\" height=\"261\" srcset=\"https:\/\/magoosh.com\/praxis\/files\/2016\/07\/6953416198_213c311042_z-267x300.jpg 267w, https:\/\/magoosh.com\/praxis\/files\/2016\/07\/6953416198_213c311042_z.jpg 569w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 232px) 100vw, 232px\" \/><\/a> Source: Flickr user\u00a0<a class=\"owner-name truncate\" title=\"Go to wiredforlego's photostream\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/wiredforsound23\/6953416198\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">wiredforlego<\/a><\/p>\n<p>This is trickier for <a href=\"https:\/\/magoosh.com\/praxis\/what-is-a-teaching-paraprofessional\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">paraprofessionals<\/a>, who are often assigned to work specifically with one or two kids, but a lot of the teamwork aspects can still be developed in a high quality classroom.<\/p>\n<h2>Figure Out How to Keep Kids in the Classroom<\/h2>\n<p>Inclusion, or <a href=\"https:\/\/schools.magoosh.com\/schools-blog\/inclusion-helping-all-students-belong-in-your-classroom\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">building a classroom community that supports all students<\/a>, is an evidence-based best practice. Work together to figure out how to support kids with diverse needs within the classroom, rather than pulling them out. It\u2019s possible to use the time when the special educator is in the classroom as \u201cco-teaching\u201d time. Get creative. One solution is for the general educator to introduce a lesson, and for a special educator to go around to small groups or individuals giving fine-tuned teaching for the next steps. Ask lots of questions and keep an open mind. Try learning each other\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/schools.magoosh.com\/schools-blog\/tips-for-new-teachers-classroom-management\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">approaches for behavior management<\/a> or individualization. You may not agree on everything, and that\u2019s okay, too.<\/p>\n<h2>Help Each Other<\/h2>\n<p>At the beginning of the year, it would be helpful to have a discussion about teamwork. You could even take the time to <a href=\"https:\/\/msb.franklincovey.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">write a mission statement<\/a> together! At any rate, resolve early on that you\u2019d like to work as partners on a team. Get in the habit of communicating with each other. Have each other\u2019s backs.
