It&#8217;s absolutely true that for success in the Praxis Mathematics Test, you should be familiar with some basic formulas; in this vein, it&#8217;s worthwhile to share these formulas with students.<\/p>\n<p>Beware, though: one of the biggest mistakes math students can make is to mistake the knowledge of a formula for <em>genuine mathematical understanding<\/em>. Knowledge of all the formulas is liking knowing all the rules for how the pieces move in chess: yes, that knowledge is essential for play, but mastery of these basic rules is only the beginning\u2014that knowledge alone doesn&#8217;t automatically make one a world-class chess master! In this spirit, know these formulas, but recognize <a href=\"https:\/\/magoosh.com\/praxis\/difficult-math-questions-on-the-praxis-core\/\">how much more there is to learn<\/a> beyond these.<\/p>\n<h2>Numbers and Operations<\/h2>\n<p>First, a few patterns stated in variables: these are not so much &#8220;formulas&#8221; as patterns to recognize.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Commutative Property of Addition<\/strong>: A + B = B + A<\/p>\n<p><strong>Commutative Property of Multiplication<\/strong>: A \u00d7 B = B \u00d7 A<\/p>\n<p><strong>Associative Property of Addition<\/strong>: (A + B) + C = A + (B + C)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Associative Property of Multiplication<\/strong>: (A \u00d7 B) \u00d7 C = A \u00d7 (B \u00d7 C)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Distributive Property<\/strong>: A \u00d7 (B + C) = AB + AC<\/p>\n<p>Also, an important fraction pattern, <strong>Cross Multiplication<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/magoosh.com\/praxis\/files\/2015\/10\/aoverb.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-53\" src=\"https:\/\/magoosh.com\/praxis\/files\/2015\/10\/aoverb.png\" alt=\"cross-multiplication-math praxis formulas\" width=\"180\" height=\"41\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nFinally, the rule for <strong>Percents<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-54\" src=\"https:\/\/magoosh.com\/praxis\/files\/2015\/10\/percentequals.png\" alt=\"percent-math praxis\" width=\"180\" height=\"47\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Algebra<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Motion problems<\/strong>: D = RT<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s distance equals rate times time.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Work problems<\/strong>: A = RT<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s amount equals work rate times time.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Geometry<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Units of Measurement<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>1 foot = 12 inches<\/p>\n<p>1 yard = 3 feet<\/p>\n<p>1 mile = 5280 feet = 1760 yards<\/p>\n<p>1 meter = 100 cm<\/p>\n<p>1 km = 1000 meters<\/p>\n<p>1 mile \u2248 1.6 km<\/p>\n<p>1 decimeter = 10 cm \u2248 4 inches<\/p>\n<p>1 pound = 16 &#8220;dry&#8221; ounces<\/p>\n<p>1 short ton = 2000 lbs<\/p>\n<p>1 kg = 1000 grams<\/p>\n<p>1 kg \u2248 2.2 lbs<\/p>\n<p>1 cup = 8 fluid ounces<\/p>\n<p>1 pint = 2 cups<\/p>\n<p>1 quart = 2 points = 4 cups<\/p>\n<p>1 gallon = 4 quarts = 16 cups<\/p>\n<p>1 liter = 1000 mL<\/p>\n<p>1 mL = 1 cubic centimeter<\/p>\n<p>1 liter \u2248 1 quart (a liter is a little bigger)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/magoosh.com\/praxis\/files\/2015\/10\/Screen-Shot-2015-10-30-at-8.21.20-PM.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-58\" src=\"https:\/\/magoosh.com\/praxis\/files\/2015\/10\/Screen-Shot-2015-10-30-at-8.21.20-PM.png\" alt=\"areas-new-praxis math formulas\" width=\"295\" height=\"239\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In Coordinate Geometry, it&#8217;s good to know<br \/>\n<strong>Slope-Intercept Form<\/strong>: y = mx + b<\/p>\n<p>You should understand that<strong> m<\/strong> is the slope and <strong>b<\/strong> is the y-intercept of the line.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ll also give you two formulas for <strong>slope<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/magoosh.com\/praxis\/files\/2015\/10\/Screen-Shot-2015-10-30-at-8.19.39-PM.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-57 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/magoosh.com\/praxis\/files\/2015\/10\/Screen-Shot-2015-10-30-at-8.19.39-PM.png\" alt=\"slope-math formulas praxis\" width=\"390\" height=\"84\" srcset=\"https:\/\/magoosh.com\/praxis\/files\/2015\/10\/Screen-Shot-2015-10-30-at-8.19.39-PM.png 390w, https:\/\/magoosh.com\/praxis\/files\/2015\/10\/Screen-Shot-2015-10-30-at-8.19.39-PM-300x65.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 390px) 100vw, 390px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Data Analysis<\/h2>\n<p><strong>definition of mean (average)<\/strong>: mean = (sum of terms)\/(the number of terms)<\/p>\n<p><strong>definition of range<\/strong>: range = (max value) \u2013 (min value)<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In <strong>Probability<\/strong>, you should know the <strong>expected number<\/strong> formula.<\/p>\n<p>expected number of successes = (probability)*(number of trials)<\/p>\n<p>You should also know<\/p>\n<p>0 \u2264 P \u2264 1<\/p>\n<p>P = 0 means an event is impossible, guaranteed not to happen<\/p>\n<p>P = 1 means an event is certain, guaranteed to happen<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Praxis Math Formula Summary<\/h2>\n<p>Those are the basic Praxis math formulas. Know these, but appreciate that these formulas are far from the whole story of mathematical understanding.
