6 Practice Questions for the Praxis Core

The Praxis Core Series consists of three exams: Core Math, Core Reading, and Core Writing. In this post, we’ll look at a cross section of these exams, with two typical questions from each exam.

 

Core Math practice questions

1) If 3(9x-5) = 8(3x)-2, what is the value of x?

Core Reading practice questions

Questions 3 and 4 refer to the following passage:

In the United States, Japan, and a handful of other countries, eggs are washed and sanitized before they are shipped to supermarkets, and are kept refrigerated until they are prepared and eaten. In nations that practice egg washing and egg refrigeration, conventional wisdom states that this is the only way to keep eggs free of contaminants and safe to eat.

However, there is another effective approach to keeping eggs safe for consumption. In many European and Asian countries, the chickens that lay eggs receive vaccinations for salmonella and other diseases. When this preventative measure is taken, freshly laid eggs are contamination-free and do not need to be washed. Furthermore, if eggs are not washed, they retain the protective outer covering on their shells, which keeps bad bacteria out. With this protection in place, eggs can be stored at room temperature for days.

3) The author most likely mentions “conventional wisdom” in the first paragraph in order to

      Just reaching out to say I agree that (-5, 4) is the right answer, but it looks like the choices have been switched around and that (D) is the correct one, now. I’m thinking someone got to this but didn’t thank you so… thank you! 🙂

    Can we discuss questions 5 and 6? Because I will be taking the Writing exam soon and I did not receive any credit for those two questions… I need an explanation, please? = )

      Hi Bianca,

      How embarrassing! I realize I never got around to writing a part 2 for this post. Magoosh no longer has me working on the Praxis Blog (I’m doing a lot more on some of our other blogs these days), so I don’t know when or if there will be a part 2 for this post. But I can certainly discuss Q5 and Q6 with you here in the comments. 🙂

      For question 5, the fourth option is incorrect because it uses the wrong verb tense. All of the other verbs in the sentence or simple present. This is the correct tense, because the simple present can be used to describe general conditions and facts. Suddenly shifting from simple present tense in most of the sentence to the simple past tense “were” for no reason doesn’t make sense. This constitutes a grammar error.

      For question 6, the first choice is correct because it is error free and has a good stylistic “flow.” Answer (B) is wrong because it is unnecessarily wordy. You could say the same thing in a more straightforward way. Answer (C) is wrong because the correct idiom is “inspired by,” not “inspired with.” (D) doesn’t work because it has an unnecessary “and.” “And” should only be used when you are listing two things. Here we have the verb “inspired,” but there’s no other verb after the “and,” so the “and” does not list two verbs. Instead, it appears int he middle of the phrasal verb “inspired by,” interrupting the verb’s structure in a strange and distracting way. Then for answer choice (E), “mathematics workings” is a strange and repetitive turn of phrase. It’s awkward to have a plural “s” at the end of both the adjective “mathematics” and the noun “workings.” And “workings” isn’t the correct term for a body of academic achievement anyway. A body of academic achievement is referred to as a scholar’s “work,” not “workings.”
