9 Awesome Scholarships for Teachers

It takes a fair amount of education to become a teacher, and undergraduate and graduate students know that getting a degree in the United States can come with a hefty price tag.

Since you’re probably already considering taking the Praxis, don’t let your goal of becoming a teacher get sidelined for want of money: there are plenty of scholarships for teachers available to current and prospective students.

Here are some of the best.

Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education Grant

The TEACH award is a federally-funded scholarship that provides up to $4,000 a year to students pursuing a degree in education. The grant requires that you teach in a high-need field, at a school with low-income students, and for at least four years after finishing your degree.

Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) Teacher Scholarships

The STEM scholarships range from $2,500 to $5,000, and are available to United States citizens pursuing a graduate degree or credential/licensure program to teach one of the STEM (science, technology, engineering, or math) subjects in a U.S. K-12 school. Although the scholarship is designed for graduate students, undergraduate seniors that are pursuing a dual-degree education program are eligible to apply.

American Montessori Society Scholarship

Students hoping to become a teacher in a Montessori school can apply for the American Montessori Society Scholarship. The scholarships vary in value, but several are $1,000 each. The Montessori method is a specific education philosophy and style developed by Dr. Maria Montessori.

Bright Horizons Scholarship

If you’re hoping to enter the early education field, check out the Bright Horizons ‘Bright Futures’ Scholarship. The scholarships range in value from $250 to $1,000, and are available to full-time undergraduate and graduate students.

National Board for Professional Teaching Standards Scholarships

The NBPTS offers various state-specific merit scholarships. You’ll need to check with your state to see if you qualify.
