Many people need to take the Praxis more than once before they pass. Needing to retake the Praxis can be frustrating, but it isn’t a deal breaker. As long as you have the time (and fees), you most likely can retake the Praxis as many times as you need to pass.
How Many Times Can I Retake the Praxis?
ETS does not have any limits on how many times you can retake the Praxis. Some states and institutions may have retake limits, though. Check with your school and your state certification agency to see if they have any retake limits.
How Often Can I Retake the Praxis?
You can take the Praxis once every 21 days, not including your initial test date. Even if you canceled your test scores on the first test, you still have to wait the 21 days. You should be able to register for another test while you are waiting, just make sure the next test date isn’t too soon.
Do I Still Need to Pay?
Yep, sorry. You still need to pay the test fee each time you take the Praxis. All the more incentive to study and do well the first time you take the test! 😉 (Some people are eligible for Praxis fee waivers, see if you might qualify.)
Can I Retake the Praxis Subtests?
If you need to retake just one section of the Praxis Core, say just the Math section (for example), you can do that. The registration and retake process is the same, except with one Praxis subtest (and the corresponding fee) instead of the full three-part Praxis Core.
Official Praxis Test Retake Policy
Still have questions? Here is the official test retake policy from ETS. ETS’s retake policy allows you to retake the test every 21 days, excluding the initial test date. If you take a test that includes subtests (such as Elementary Education), you must also wait the 21 days to retake the subtest. The retake policy applies even if you have canceled your previous scores. Violations of this restriction will mean that the scores from your most recent test will not be reported, and you will also not be issued a refund.
While you can retake the Praxis over and over, that can get stressful and expensive fast! Eventually, you’ll also run out of time before you need a passing score in order to teach. The next time you take the Praxis, make sure you are prepared to do your best. Here are a few resources to start:
