When you are ready to apply for a nursing license it is important to be familiar with the state requirements. Each state has different requirements and fees. Planning ahead will allow you to organize the required paperwork and budget for the required expenses.
NY RN Licensing Step 1:
Complete an approved nursing program and then have the school send a certificate of program completion to the board of nursing.
If you were educated in a foreign country, your education credentials will need to be verified first by the Foreign Nursing Schools (CGFNS) and then by the New York State Education Department.
NY RN Licensing Step 2:
Register with Pearson Vue. There is a $200 fee for registering for the NCLEX-RN exam. Once all eligibility criteria have been verified, you will be contacted with information on scheduling your exam.
NY RN Licensing Step 3:
Complete the New York State registered nurse license application. Be sure to complete all sections and verify that all of your information is correct. You will need to have your signature notarized which means do not sign until the notary is present to witness your signature. You can usually find a notary at your local municipal hall, bank or at your school. Be sure to being a photo id with you for the notary to check. There is an application fee of $143 (check or money order payable to the New York State Education Department) which needs to be submitted with your application.

NY RN Licensing Step 4:
New York State requires that all applicants complete two training requirements which are Child Abuse Identification and Reporting and Infection Control. First check with your school, most programs cover this mandated training and you can indicate this on your application. If you need to take these courses, there are many options, both in person or online with varying costs.
NY RN Licensing Step 5:
Once you receive your testing confirmation information from Pearson Vue, you can schedule your exam. Stay calm and focused knowing that you have worked hard and prepared for this exam. You are on your way to becoming a member of the very rewarding field of nursing. Good Luck!
