NCLEX-RN for International Nurses

NCLEX-RN for International Nurses

If you completed your registered nursing education and clinical training outside of the United States, there are a few additional steps you will need to complete when applying for your RN license. When you are ready to apply for a nursing license it is important to be familiar with the state requirements. Each state has different requirements and fees. Planning ahead will allow you to organize the required paperwork and budget for the required expenses.

Commission of Foreign Nursing Schools

If you were educated in a foreign country, the process for obtaining your registered nurse license in most states requires a review of your training and an English proficiency test. The full education course review is completed by the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools (CGFNS). This process takes approximately 8 weeks from the time that all of the required documents are received. For an additional cost, the process can be expedited from 8 weeks to 10 days. The fees vary depending on the time frame and additional costs are required if you need to resubmit your application. You will also have to show proof of passing the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) exam.  It is important for you to plan ahead and stay very organized.  Make a list of everything that is required, when you plan to complete each task, and the cost.  Check off each item as you complete it, advancing one more step closer to becoming a licensed nurse in the United States.
