Once you have completed your nursing education, you will be ready to apply to take the NCLEX-RN exam, which requires a two-step registration process. To avoid delays between your completion of training and taking the NCLEX-RN, be sure to complete both of the required steps. You should also consider the associated costs for applying for your license and the NCLEX-RN exam.
1. Apply for your Registered Nurse License
After graduating from nursing school, you will need to apply for your registered nurse license in the state where you plan to practice. Each state has specific requirements which must be completed in order to qualify for a license as a registered nurse. For example, some states will require criminal background checks, fingerprints, copies of your driver’s license or state issued identification card and/or an official passport photo. Some states will also require candidates to take required educational modules prior to applying and periodically before renewing their license. Review the State Board of Nursing requirements and associated costs in advance so that you have time to complete all the requirements in advance.
Stay organized while applying for your nursing license and keep all of the required documents in one place. Keep a copy of everything you have submitted. Most states now allow you to complete the application online and provide you with a login so that you can track the status of your application. If you must mail anything to the board of nursing, you should send it as certified mail so that you will receive confirmation that it has been received. Once the state board of nursing has determined that you are qualified to sit for the NCLEX-RN exam they will notify Pearson Vue that you are an approved Candidate.
