There were 293,882 administrations of the MCAT from 2022 to 2024. Percentiles<\/h3>\n<p>For comparison, you can check out the <a href=\"https:\/\/students-residents.aamc.org\/advisors\/article\/percentile-ranks-for-the-mcat-exam\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">percentile data<\/a> from previous years, as well as the old MCAT.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"percentilesMeaning\"><\/a> &nbsp;<br \/>\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>What do MCAT score percentiles mean?<\/h2>\n<p>Like I said above, the percentile in the score report is a measure of how well your score compares with all other people who took the MCAT. It is NOT a measure of what percentage of questions you got right. For example, a 95<sup>th<\/sup> percentile score means that 95% of all test takers received the same score or lower. <\/p>\n<p>In other words, a student that attains a 95<sup>th<\/sup> percentile score is in the top 5% of all test takers. <\/p>\n<p>One advantage of the <a href=\"http:\/\/mcat.magoosh.com\/plans?utm_source=mcatblog&#038;utm_medium=blog&#038;utm_campaign=mcatplans&#038;utm_term=inline&#038;utm_content=mcat-score-percentiles\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Magoosh online study course<\/a> is that we have hundreds of practice questions from each area, and we added an extra CARS section (<em><strong>that&#8217;s a total of 212 CARS questions!<\/strong><\/em>). Here, we show you the most recent score percentiles. These percentiles help medical schools compare you with other test takers.<br \/>\n<a id=\"sectionScores\"><\/a><br \/>\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Do my MCAT score percentiles for the different sections matter?<\/h2>\n<p>It depends. <\/p>\n<p>Medical schools want to see balanced performances on the MCAT. If your overall score was in the 99<sup>th<\/sup> percentile, and the different sections ranged from 97-99%, the MCAT score percentiles for each section probably are not as important. <\/p>\n<p>As a contrasting example, let&#8217;s say you scored in the 80<sup>th<\/sup> percentile, with the following in each section:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>99% for Chemical and Physical Foundations of Biological Systems<\/li>\n<li>99% for Biological and Biochemical Foundations of Living Systems<\/li>\n<li>40% for Critical Analysis and Reasoning Skills<\/li>\n<li>30% for Psychological, Social, and Biological Foundations of Behavior<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>That 80<sup>th<\/sup> percentile may not be as strong as one might think, because it raises red flags about the test taker\u2019s abilities outside of science.<\/p>\n<p>The point to take away is that <strong>you can\u2019t rely on only one subject or section to help boost your overall score.<\/strong> In addition to a high score and percentile, balance is very important.  <\/p>\n<p><a id=\"scoreGoal\"><\/a> &nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>What score percentile should I try to get?<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aamc.org\/data-reports\/students-residents\/data\/facts-applicants-and-matriculants\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Using data from the AAMC<\/a>, the average score of applicants who matriculated to medical school in 2024-2025 scored 511.8. This equates to roughly the 82nd percentile. <\/p>\n<p>However, as mentioned in our <a href=\"https:\/\/magoosh.com\/mcat\/what-is-a-good-mcat-score\/\">\u201cWhat is a good MCAT score?\u201d<\/a> post, the percentile that is \u201cgood\u201d or \u201cgood enough\u201d for you really depends on your goals and the rest of your application.<\/p>\n<p>If you look closely at the MCAT score percentiles for both exams, you\u2019ll notice that the distributions are close to that of a bell curve. This means that most students score close to average (506.1 for all test-takers) and few score particularly high or low. <\/p>\n<p>To determine their target scores, most students will start by looking at the average score of matriculants to a certain medical school. For example, say a student was interested in NYU School of Medicine. The <a href=\"https:\/\/med.nyu.edu\/education\/md-degree\/md-admissions\/admissions-requirements\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">mean MCAT score at NYU<\/a> for the entering class is 523. On the new MCAT, this is a 99<sup>th<\/sup> percentile score.
