How to Crack JEE Advanced

The JEE Advanced is an engineering entrance exam taken up by students who wish to join the IITs (23 at present). The exam follows an objective pattern to test the knowledge of the students. It is regarded as one of the toughest examinations across the world. Read on to know how to crack the JEE Advanced!

The eligibility condition for the JEE Advanced is to qualify the screening examination, i.e. JEE Mains. The top 1.5 Lakh students who appear in JEE Mains are allowed to sit in JEE Advanced. More than 10 Lakh students appear for JEE Mains every year. The number of seats in JEE Advanced is around 10 thousand. The competition is tough. So it’s important to know the do’s and don’ts.

What Does the JEE Advanced Demand?

The way to go about JEE Advanced and JEE Mains are different. For JEE Mains, only being thorough with the basics of the subjects is important. But for the JEE Advanced, it is important to build up on these basics and be ready to solve problems which require comprehension, reasoning, and analytical skills. So, you should make sure that you devote ample time to concept building. Once you have completed this part, you should head towards questions which test the skills that are covered in 11 and 12 itself.


To do well in the examination, you should have a chapter-wise timetable for each subject. Each topic should be weighted depending on its difficulty and relevance. You should pay attention to the following topics:

  • Physics: Dimensional Analysis, Gravitation, Electrostatics, Current Electricity & Heat Transfer, Electromagnetic Induction, Waves & Sound, Geometrical Optics, Thermodynamics, Kinetic Theory of Gases and Rotational Dynamics.
  • Mathematics: Inverse Trigonometric Functions, Circles and Family of Circles, Sequence and Series, Probability, Vectors, Quadratic equations and expressions, Complex numbers, Matrices, Parabola, Hyperbola in Coordinate Geometry, Functions, Limits, Continuity and Differentiability, Application of Derivatives, and Definite Integrals in Calculus.
  • Chemistry: Mole concept & the concept of Equivalents, Redox Reactions, Electrochemistry, Thermodynamics and Chemical Equilibrium in Physical Chemistry. Carbonyl Compounds & their derivatives in Organic Chemistry, and Coordination Chemistry, Chemical Bonding and Qualitative Analysis in Inorganic Chemistry complete as a topic.

How to Study

The ideal time to start preparations is as early as possible. Class 11 is ideal, but the right time for you is the moment you decide that you want to get into an IIT. Being the master of a craft is very different from being someone who always out-performs others in an exam. Accuracy, speed, confidence, and hard work helps you master the craft of acing an exam.

  • Be Regular : Set a feasible target. Make sure that you are up to date with the target. Never procrastinate. Have a balance between reading books to strengthen your basics, and practising problems. Practising problems helps you strengthen your concepts as these two things go hand in hand. Practising problems helps you think about points you considered irrelevant while reading theory.
  • Revision : There is no point to learning if you cannot reproduce what you’ve learned. And you won’t be able to reproduce it if you don’t revise. Everything that we learn fades away from our memory with time. And given the volume of the syllabus for the JEE Advanced, it’s not a surprise. So be sure to make notes while you go through a topic. At the end, make short notes about the same.

    You can even include a few problems in your short notes which had something out of the box to offer you. The notes help a great deal when it’s time to revise. Going through the entire book for revision would take a lot of time. Short notes help at the end just before your exams when you need to quickly revise all the topics.

  • Track Progress: Take tests regularly. If you are solving mock papers by yourself, make sure that you are as serious, dedicated, and concentrated as you would be when you take the paper for real. Monitor your progress. Spend some time to analyze your performance and use it to identify your weak areas and work on them. Keep a record of your speed too.
  • Meditation/Exercise : Given the mental pressure that comes with the level of dedication that this exam demands, meditation can be a great help. It helps you keep your calm during the exam, and keep your mind fit. Do regular exercise and yoga. This helps keep your body sound while improving your concentration.
  • Study Material : Select good study material. It can do wonders for you! Good material helps you optimize the output of your efforts. Make sure that your expectations of the study material and what it has to offer you are streamlined.
  • Don’t Just Rely On Shortcuts : While studying, you will come across many shortcuts. You might find them useful. But remember to keep hold of the concept behind each short cut! You can only apply them in the exam if you have a sound knowledge of the topic and the method that was supposed to be used to solve the problem.
  • Develop Problem Solving skills : During practice sessions, try to develop speed while solving problems. Aim for a whooping 100 percent hit rate while solving problems. This will give you a huge competitive edge over others. Speed and accuracy will also allow you to finish among the top in JEE Advanced. Time is always an important factor in this exam–so learn to use it wisely.

Subject-Wise Strategies


Understanding of the concepts of physics comes from practice. Concentrate on understanding the concepts rather than memorizing formulae. Be perfect with the concepts. Being able to solve questions without an insight into them can be catastrophic in an exam like the JEE Advanced. The best way to do this is solve a book or your study material completely. This gives you an opportunity to solve all the quality questions covering all the important concepts.


Mathematics is an art and it comes only with practice. Like every other art, it asks for intuition, and that comes only with practice. The questions demand a certain level of dedication and hard work. Practicing many subjective problems can help a lot. The concepts and formulae should be at your fingertips–and you should be able to reproduce both the formulae and their derivation. Know every shortcut that you can take.


In Organic Chemistry, you need to remember all named reactions and study all reaction mechanisms. Study the chapters well, and make notes while you study.

Complete NCERT thoroughly for preparation of Inorganic Chemistry and make notes for each chapter.

For Physical Chemistry, study from books like OP Tandon and P Bahadur. After you are done with a chapter, write down all equations of the chapter in a notebook so that you can refer to them readily when needed.

The JEE Advanced is no different. A strict schedule makes things a little easier for you. Know your goal and the path to it. Learn concepts, then practice them.
