JEE Main Exam Pattern: Here’s What to Expect on Test Day

Once you have decided to take the JEE Main exam, one of the most important things for you to do is to figure out the JEE Main exam pattern, which has been consistent over several years. In this article, I’ll be telling you about the JEE Main Paper-1 pattern only, since it is the one that you have to take for gaining admission into B.E./B.Tech programs. Exam Structure

The paper consists of 90 multiple choice questions, each of which has a single correct answer. There are 30 questions each of Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics.

Marks

Each correct answer is awarded 4 marks, and 1 mark is deducted for each wrong answer. An unanswered question is allotted 0 marks. Filling up more than 1 response to any question will be treated as a wrong answer and marks will be deducted accordingly. The maximum marks one can secure are 360. The duration of the exam is 3 hours.

JEE Main Exam Pattern – Physics   

In physics, Mechanics is the most important topic. In terms of the number of questions, Modern Physics comes second. It is followed by topics like Electromagnetism, Optics, and Wave Optics. Questions from topics like Thermodynamics, Fluid Mechanics, Electrostatics, and Current Electricity are relatively lower in number.

JEE Main Exam Pattern – Chemistry

In chemistry, all the topics namely Organic Chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry, and Physical Chemistry are equally important. However, Organic Chemistry holds slightly higher weight, followed by Physical Chemistry and then Inorganic Chemistry.

JEE Main Exam Pattern – Mathematics

In mathematics, Algebra is the most important topic. It is followed by Coordinate Geometry and Differential Calculus, both of which hold approximately the same weight. In terms of weight of marks in the mathematics section of JEE Main, these topics are followed by Integral Calculus, Trigonometry, Vector, and 3D Geometry.
