Let\u2019s talk about why you may be feeling anxious and some points\u00a0that\u2019ll help you deal with nervousness in the IELTS oral exam.<\/p>\n<h2>Fake it Until You Make It?<\/h2>\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicaldaily.com\/performance-anxiety-better-quelled-excitement-relaxation-power-faking-it-til-you-make-it-265714\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">researchers investigating nervousness<\/a>, the common English expression \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fake_it_%27til_you_make_it\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">fake it until you make it<\/a>\u201d rings true. They don\u2019t suggest that you can fake perfect English (sorry), but that you can portray, or even manifest\u00a0confidence during the interview even if you\u2019re not feeling it.<\/p>\n<p>Nervousness during an interview comes from your body\u2019s biological responses to the situation\u2014adrenaline, increased heart rate, changes in blood flow, etc. Interestingly, these experiences are similar to the biological sensations associated with excitement. In other words, nervousness feels surprisingly like excitement.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 512px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.relatably.com\/m\/img\/nervous-memes\/drf6m0.jpg\" alt=\"nervousness during the ielts exam -magoosh\" width=\"512\" height=\"384\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">image from relatably.com<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>But why am I telling you this? Well, research has proven that we can take mentally turn nervous energy into excitement by reframing our perception of the situation. So let\u2019s get excited about the IELTS interview!<\/p>\n<h2>6 Reasons to Get Excited (not\u00a0nervous) About Your IELTS Interview<\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Get real-world English conversational experience<\/strong><br \/>\nFor some of us who have spent years studying our new language, finding opportunities to practice isn\u2019t easy where we live. Conversational practice is literally the only way to develop conversational skill. This interview may be short, but it\u2019s invaluable real-world practice that will strengthen the unconscious developing linguistic system accessed\u00a0when you speak English.\u00a0<em><em>Sweet!<\/em><\/em><\/li>\n<li><strong>Meet interesting people who work for IELTS<\/strong><br \/>\nMaybe you haven\u2019t thought of it this way, but <a href=\"https:\/\/magoosh.com\/ielts\/who-are-the-ielts-examiners\/\">the IELTS examiners<\/a> are diverse in\u00a0cultural and national backgrounds and have met countless others from all over the world. They are trained English teachers who do what they do because they enjoy working with language learners. Check out <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=4ta4CESUj94\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">this real IELTS interview<\/a>.\u00a0That guy has awesome English, but his nervousness struck me right away. As a language teacher (and a language student), I have seen this in students and I have felt it myself. And guess what\u2013so has your interviewer.<\/p>\n<p>Want to know\u00a0what I do? I tell them,\u00a0<em>\u201cAhhh, I\u2019m a little nervous!\u201d<\/em>\u00a0As humans who understand this experience, they will probably comfort you and assure you that you don\u2019t need to be.<\/p>\n<p><strong>You cannot fail the interview.<\/strong>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/magoosh.com\/ielts\/ielts-speaking\/\">The IELTS speaking test marking system<\/a> is a scale of conversational skill. Where do you fall on it? Your conversation will tell\u00a0the interviewer where\u00a0place you on that scale. It\u2019s that simple, so don\u2019t be afraid to fail\u2014you can\u2019t!<\/p>\n<p><strong>It\u2019s less than 15 minutes!<\/strong>\u00a0The IELTS folks say you can expect the interview to last 11-14 minutes. She has a B.A. in Foreign Language and Literature and an M.A. in Applied Linguistics at UMASS Boston.
