(You can watch the video now, or check it out later after reading this guide!)<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"color: #4D2079\">IELTS Map Vocabulary<\/h2>\n<p>Before we look at the finer parts of how to write about an IELTS map, let&#8217;s think about the basic features of these maps and the IELTS map vocabulary used to describe them. In a nutshell, most IELTS maps will show a large location with buildings and other specific types of areas and locations. And typically, there will actually be two maps: a before and after map. With that in mind, there are three major important categories of vocabulary for describing such maps. For each of the three categories below, I&#8217;ve given a partial list of the kids of words you might use. This should give you a general idea, and I would encourage you to think up additional similar words on your own.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"color: #C5168C\"><strong>Words that Describe the Places<\/strong><\/h3>\n<h4><strong>NOUNS:<\/strong><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>building<\/li>\n<li>housing<\/li>\n<li>business<\/li>\n<li>region<\/li>\n<li>forest<\/li>\n<li>river<\/li>\n<li>lake<\/li>\n<li>entrance<\/li>\n<li>exit<\/li>\n<li>road<\/li>\n<li>bridge<\/li>\n<li>complex<\/li>\n<li>district<\/li>\n<li>facility<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><strong>ADJECTIVES:<\/strong><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>larger<\/li>\n<li>smaller<\/li>\n<li>longer<\/li>\n<li>shorter<\/li>\n<li>urban<\/li>\n<li>rural<\/li>\n<li>crowded<\/li>\n<li>broad<\/li>\n<li>narrow<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 style=\"color: #C5168C\"><strong>Words that Describe the Locations of Places<\/strong><\/h3>\n<h4><strong>COMPASS WORDS:<\/strong> <\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>north<\/li>\n<li>east<\/li>\n<li>south<\/li>\n<li>west<\/li>\n<li>northeast<\/li>\n<li>southwest<\/li>\n<li>etc&#8230;<\/li>\n<li>NOTE: Even if a compass does not appear on a map, you can assume that up is north, down is south, left is west, and right is east<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><strong>DIRECTIONAL WORDS AND PREPOSITIONS:<\/strong><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>left<\/li>\n<li>right<\/li>\n<li>above<\/li>\n<li>below<\/li>\n<li>inside<\/li>\n<li>around<\/li>\n<li>adjacent<\/li>\n<li>near<\/li>\n<li>opposite<\/li>\n<li>across from<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 style=\"color: #C5168C\"><strong>Words that Describe Actions and Change<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>built<\/li>\n<li>constructed<\/li>\n<li>replaced<\/li>\n<li>extended<\/li>\n<li>removed<\/li>\n<li>expanded<\/li>\n<li>demolished<\/li>\n<li>renovated<\/li>\n<li>newly<\/li>\n<li>mostly<\/li>\n<li>significant<\/li>\n<li>substantial<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 style=\"color: #4D2079\">How to Write About an IELTS Map<\/h2>\n<p>How to write a map essay in IELTS involves a simple 5 step process:<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"color: #C5168C\"><strong>1. Get Fluent in Basic IELTS Map Vocabulary<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Develop your skills and knowledge for words that describe places, where places are located in relation to each other, and how places change in IELTS Writing maps. The lists I&#8217;ve provided are a great place to start.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"color: #C5168C\"><strong>2. Understand The Objectives<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>To tackle the challenge of describing a map for the exam, you must understand the objectives of the task at hand. Importantly, while 75% of your score represents your linguistic performance (coherence and cohesion, vocabulary, and grammar), 25% depends on your achievement of the task.<\/p>\n<p>Earning a high <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ielts.org\/~\/media\/pdfs\/writing-band-descriptors-task-1.ashx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">band score for task 1 completion<\/a>\u00a0is awarded for a \u201cclear overview of main trends, differences, or stages.\u201d If a clear overview cannot be achieved, you must <em>minimally<\/em> highlight the key features related to the prompt.<\/p>\n<p>With this in mind, check out the image below:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/magoosh.com\/ielts\/files\/2021\/04\/IELTS-Map-Blog-Post.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"834\" height=\"884\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3593\" srcset=\"https:\/\/magoosh.com\/ielts\/files\/2021\/04\/IELTS-Map-Blog-Post.png 834w, https:\/\/magoosh.com\/ielts\/files\/2021\/04\/IELTS-Map-Blog-Post-283x300.png 283w, https:\/\/magoosh.com\/ielts\/files\/2021\/04\/IELTS-Map-Blog-Post-768x814.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 834px) 100vw, 834px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>If we want to consider key features or trends, it wouldn\u2019t be enough to say that there are rides, recreational areas, and places where goods can be purchased. This doesn\u2019t provide any overviews; it simply lists elements. Noting patterns and overall \u201ctrends\u201d requires looking at the bigger picture, not isolated elements. An overview might point out instead that rides and tours tend to be farther from the parking area (i.e. the roller coaster, Ferris wheel, and magic castle), and that places where visitors can rest are closer to the theme park entrance (i.e. the food court and the playground\/picnic area).<\/p>\n<p>But you probably won\u2019t be given an image and simply told, \u201cdescribe it.\u201d Instead, you will be given a specific task, and you will use the information in the image to complete it. For example, for the image above, a the full task is actually to describe the key features and differences between the current layout of the theme park, and the way the theme park will look after some planned future changes. <\/p>\n<h3 style=\"color: #C5168C\"><strong>3. Go Beyond Naming<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Ultimately, your task requires more than mere description. While nouns are obviously important (for naming various structures and natural elements and their basic positions on the map), task completion involves more than listing\u00a0items. Describing trends, differences, or stages requires noting the relationship among\u00a0elements and between images for comparison. Remember, there&#8217;s far more to IELTS Writing Task 1 vocabulary than just the names of things.<\/p>\n<p>Imagine that your task is to examine before and after illustrations of a neighborhood over the course of a century. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/magoosh.com\/ielts\/files\/2021\/03\/NeighborhoodMap-622x1024.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"622\" height=\"1024\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-3178\" srcset=\"https:\/\/magoosh.com\/ielts\/files\/2021\/03\/NeighborhoodMap-622x1024.png 622w, https:\/\/magoosh.com\/ielts\/files\/2021\/03\/NeighborhoodMap-182x300.png 182w, https:\/\/magoosh.com\/ielts\/files\/2021\/03\/NeighborhoodMap-768x1265.png 768w, https:\/\/magoosh.com\/ielts\/files\/2021\/03\/NeighborhoodMap-933x1536.png 933w, https:\/\/magoosh.com\/ielts\/files\/2021\/03\/NeighborhoodMap-1244x2048.png 1244w, https:\/\/magoosh.com\/ielts\/files\/2021\/03\/NeighborhoodMap.png 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 622px) 100vw, 622px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>For this task, it is clearly not enough to\u00a0name what is new.\u00a0<strong>Don\u2019t just describe what\u2019s there, describe the <em>relationship<\/em> between what\u2019s there.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>For example, do not simply say \u201cthere is an office complex that wasn&#8217;t there before.\u201d What relationship does this have to the big picture? \u00a0Remember, you must be able to provide an <em>overview<\/em>.<\/p>\n<table id=\"tablepress-76\" class=\"tablepress tablepress-id-76 tablepress-responsive\">\n<thead>\n<tr class=\"row-1 odd\">\n<th class=\"column-1\">NO:<\/th>\n<th class=\"column-2\">YES:<\/th>\n<\/tr>\n<\/thead>\n<tbody class=\"row-hover\">\n<tr class=\"row-2 even\">\n<td class=\"column-1\">There was a cannery.<\/td>\n<td class=\"column-2\">The cannery was along the northwest side of Oak Avenue.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr class=\"row-3 odd\">\n<td class=\"column-1\">There is a main road and side roads.<\/td>\n<td class=\"column-2\">The main road is connected to side roads that are closer to the lake and river.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr class=\"row-4 even\">\n<td class=\"column-1\">There is a petrol station.<\/td>\n<td class=\"column-2\">There is a petrol station on the other side of the road from the Yang Office Complex.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr class=\"row-5 odd\">\n<td class=\"column-1\">There are two shops.<\/td>\n<td class=\"column-2\">The main road currently has two shops between some apartment buildings and homes.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr class=\"row-6 even\">\n<td class=\"column-1\">There was a smaller elementary school.<\/td>\n<td class=\"column-2\">The smaller elementary school sat on the north side of Miller&#8217;s Lake.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p><!-- #tablepress-76 from cache --><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"color: #C5168C\"><strong>4. Describe the Changes Between the Two Maps<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>But, wait! Your overview shouldn\u2019t just mention elements and their relationship to one another. How are the elements that you&#8217;re describing relevant to the prompt? <strong>What changes have been made?\u00a0<\/strong>We must\u00a0connect these observations to the before and after\u00a0context, reflecting change:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The cannery along the northwest side of Oak Avenue was replaced by an office complex.<\/li>\n<li>The main road is connected to side roads that are closer to the lake and river. In the second map, the road that ended near the river now goes over the river via bridge.<\/li>\n<li>There is a petrol station on the other side of the road from the Yang Office Complex, where the elementary school had been on the older map.<\/li>\n<li>The main road currently has two shops, where previously there had been just one shop. These shops sit between the more recently constructed apartment buildings and an expanded set of homes.<\/li>\n<li>The smaller elementary school on the north side of Miller&#8217;s Lake was expanded and moved to the east side of the lake.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Now that&#8217;s more like it! Always remember that the IELTS Writing Task 1 map comparison between the old and new features is <em>very<\/em> important.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"color: #C5168C\"><strong>5. Put These Skills Together into a Full Essay<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>At this point, you&#8217;ve mastered the basic vocabulary, made your descriptions of the places on the map more detailed, and learned to describe change between two maps.  Of course, these are just a few of many ways you could describe the map above. Your final step is to apply all this knowledge to map essays of your own creation. Rather than focusing on what\u2019s there, think about how they\u2019re related to the overall developments.<\/li>\n<li>Don\u2019t forget your primary task \u2013 What changes have been made?
