Frequent mistakes are common when learning a new language, but if more than 50% of your sentences have a single error in them, you will get a Band 6 or less on the exam. So, having perfect sentences most of the time is rather important!<\/p>\n<p>Below are some of the most common IELTS mistakes that I regularly see, which means it is likely that you are making them too! However, they are easily avoidable once you are aware of them. However, they should not be used in the IELTS Writing exams. Unfortunately, you cannot combine two complete sentences with just a comma. There are quite a few uncountable nouns, but the three IELTS grammar mistakes I see repeatedly occur with:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Advice<\/li>\n<li>Information<\/li>\n<li>Research<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If a noun is uncountable, you <b>cannot<\/b> use:<\/p>\n<p><strong>A plural verb<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Wrong example: <em>&#8220;Recent researches have shown&#8230;\u201d<\/em><\/li>\n<li>It should instead be: <em>&#8220;Recent research has shown&#8230;&#8221;<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>A number<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Wrong example: <em>&#8220;Three advices I would give&#8230;\u201d<\/em><\/li>\n<li>It should instead be: <em>&#8220;Three pieces of advice I would give&#8230;&#8221;<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>A few, a couple, many, a number of<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Wrong example: <em>&#8220;A number of information shows&#8230;\u201d<\/em><\/li>\n<li>It should instead be: <em>&#8220;A lot of information shows&#8230;&#8221;<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"#contents\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/magoosh.com\/ielts\/files\/2017\/05\/back-to-top-button.png\" alt=\"Go back to the top of our post on common IELTS mistakes.\" width=\"150\" height=\"30\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1618\" srcset=\"https:\/\/magoosh.com\/ielts\/files\/2017\/05\/back-to-top-button.png 200w, https:\/\/magoosh.com\/ielts\/files\/2017\/05\/back-to-top-button-30x6.png 30w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a name=\"the\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Using \u2018The\u2019 Correctly<\/h3>\n<p>Article misuse is one of the most common IELTS mistakes by ESL students. For many learners, it just isn\u2019t part of their native language, so learning it in English makes it doubly hard. Here are a few guidelines to help you use \u2018the\u2019 in the correct way.<\/p>\n<p>We use \u2018the\u2019 before:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Places where the name refers to a group of islands or states: <i>the USA, the UK, the Middle East, the UAE<\/i><br \/>\n&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li>Cardinal numbers: <i>the first of day of the month, the second survey shows<\/i><br \/>\n&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li>Superlatives: <i>the shortest, the longest, the lowest, the highest<\/i><br \/>\n&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li>Nouns when you are talking about a specific person, place or thing: <i>the government of India, the river in Calcutta, India, the man across the street has a beard<\/i><br \/>\n&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li>Nouns where there is only one in the entire world: <i>the internet, the environment, the ozone layer, the atmosphere<\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>We don\u2019t use \u2018the\u2019 before:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A single place or country: <i>Germany, India, Korea<\/i><br \/>\n&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li>Nouns when you are talking generally about more than one. As this is an academic essay, you need the language and examples to be formal and sound as if they have been researched. Try to cut out phrases and words that are not relevant to the task response. Americans will most likely go to Paris. I regularly see students use the word \u2018done\u2019 when citing their academic example.
