As the name suggests, the writing you will be asked to do is <strong>academic<\/strong> by nature, so below we will be covering how to write in the the style necessary to perform well on the exam.<\/p>\n<h2>Academic\/Formal Writing<\/h2>\n<p>The IELTS expects you to use an academic\/formal writing style. This means you should use the same kind of language that you would when writing a report for work or an essay for school. Obviously, you would avoid using \u201cslang\u201d words. You would also write in complete sentences and use proper punctuation. Here are some additional features of academic\/formal writing to keep in mind for Task 2:<br \/>\n&nbsp; <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Organize ideas into separate paragraphs:<\/strong>  You will lose points if you do not divide your essay into paragraphs. In the <a href=\"https:\/\/magoosh.com\/ielts\/the-best-ielts-task-2-writing-template\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">IELTS Writing Task 2 response template<\/a>, you&#8217;ll find the essential paragraphs you should include in your Task 2 response. Generally speaking, your essay must have an introduction paragraph, 2 &#8211; 3 body paragraphs, and a conclusion.<br \/>\n&nbsp; <\/li>\n<li><strong>Write in complete sentences:<\/strong> Make sure each sentence you write has an <a href=\"https:\/\/owl.purdue.edu\/owl\/general_writing\/punctuation\/independent_and_dependent_clauses\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">independent clause<\/a> with a subject and verb. When you write complex or compound sentences, use \u201cconnectors\u201d like <a href=\"https:\/\/owl.purdue.edu\/owl\/english_as_a_second_language\/esl_students\/combining_sentences\/conjunctions_and_coordination.html\">coordinating conjunctions<\/a> (and, but, so, etc) or subordinating conjunctions (when, although, because, etc).<br \/>\n&nbsp; <\/li>\n<li><strong>Avoid repetition of words and ideas:<\/strong>  Your ideas should move from one to the next logically, and you should show off your vocabulary by avoiding redundancy (don\u2019t repeat the same words over and over).<br \/>\n&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Avoid \u201cslang:\u201d<\/strong>  The English you hear in the movies or read on social media is often inappropriate for formal writing. It is a big problem to use words like \u201cdude\u201d or spellings like \u201cU\u201d (for \u201cyou\u201d) on the IELTS.<br \/>\n&nbsp; <\/li>\n<li><strong>Thoughtful and Neutral Tone:<\/strong> Academic\/formal writing has a very careful and thoughtful tone. It rarely sounds angry, excited, or overly certain about an idea. It is also best to avoid broad generalizations in formal\/academic compositions.
