Be aware that negative contractions are also typically used with <strong><em>is not<\/em><\/strong> and <strong><em>are not<\/em><\/strong> (<strong><em>isn\u2019t \/ aren\u2019t<\/em><\/strong>).<\/p>\n<p>Contracted Present Simple Examples:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>I\u2019m not<\/strong> here.<\/li>\n<li><strong>He isn\u2019t<\/strong> smart.<\/li>\n<li><strong>They aren\u2019t<\/strong> going.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Are you<\/strong> there?<\/li>\n<li><strong>Is she<\/strong> okay?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>When To Apply the Present Simple Tense<\/h2>\n<p><strong><em>Use #1: When describing actions that are repeated or occur on a regular (habitual) basis.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Examples:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>He <strong><em>runs<\/em><\/strong> all the time.<\/li>\n<li>The boxer <strong><em>crushes<\/em><\/strong> his competition.<\/li>\n<li>Johnny <strong><em>plays<\/em><\/strong> in his sandbox every afternoon.<\/li>\n<li>Roberta <strong><em>travels<\/em><\/strong> during her summer vacation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>**Note: We generally use the present continuous tense for actions currently in progress.**<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Use #2<\/em><\/strong>: <strong><em>When showing a statement or fact.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It doesn\u2019t matter if the statement is actually true (people tend to make generalizations), but this is said as something believed to be true in the past, now, and in the future.<\/p>\n<p>Examples:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Water <strong><em>boils<\/em><\/strong> at 100\u00b0C.<\/li>\n<li>I don\u2019t <strong><em>like<\/em><\/strong> hummus.<\/li>\n<li>He <strong><em>believes<\/em><\/strong> in astrology.<\/li>\n<li>Does Gary <strong><em>know<\/em><\/strong> that Jupiter <strong>is<\/strong> a planet?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>**Note: Many statements presented as scientific facts are presented in the present simple tense.**<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Use #3<\/em>: <em>When talking about a scheduled event.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This is commonly used when talking about transportation but can work for other events happening in the near future.<\/p>\n<p>Examples:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The bus <strong><em>leaves<\/em><\/strong> in thirty minutes.<\/li>\n<li>What time does the plane <strong><em>land<\/em><\/strong>?<\/li>\n<li>This train doesn\u2019t <strong><em>go<\/em><\/strong> to New York.<\/li>\n<li>The ferry <strong><em>arrives<\/em><\/strong> at 6.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><em>Use #4<\/em>: <em>When talking about something happening now<\/em>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Though you\u2019ll generally use the present continuous tense when speaking about things that are in progress, there are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecenglish.com\/learnenglish\/lessons\/non-continuous-verbs\">verbs that are non-continuous<\/a> or mixed use.
