The tense has a range of functions that we\u2019ll break down in this section.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Use #1<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>When describing a continuing state or action that happened in the past. This is usually used to give a reason or context for something.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Examples:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Where was he\/she? Or Where were they?<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>He <strong><em>was visiting<\/em><\/strong> his family in Mexico.<\/li>\n<li>I think she <strong><em>was taking<\/em><\/strong> her kids to school that morning.<\/li>\n<li>They <strong><em>were eating<\/em><\/strong> dinner at Chili\u2019s.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>How did you meet?<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>We <strong><em>were vacationing<\/em><\/strong> in Paris at the same time.<\/li>\n<li>We met when I <strong><em>was shopping<\/em><\/strong> with my mom.<\/li>\n<li>I <strong><em>was finishing<\/em><\/strong> my medical degree, and she <strong><em>was finishing<\/em><\/strong> her masters in business.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><em>Use #2<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>When describing something that was happening continuously in the past, but was interrupted by another action.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Examples:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The audience <strong>was laughing<\/strong> when the comedian fell off the stage.<\/li>\n<li>We <strong>were working<\/strong> in the garden when we heard the gunshots.<\/li>\n<li>She <strong><em>was reading<\/em><\/strong> in her room when she heard a knock at the door.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><em>Use #3<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>When describing something that was happening at a specific time.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>This flips the format of <strong><em>Use #2<\/em><\/strong> and makes the past continuous the interrupter in the sentence.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>At noon, I <strong><em>was waiting<\/em><\/strong> in my car.<\/li>\n<li>Around 2 p.m., he <strong><em>was playing<\/em><\/strong> with his daughter.<\/li>\n<li>This time yesterday, I <strong><em>was working<\/em><\/strong> on a puzzle with my grandson.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><em>Use #4<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>When describing actions happening at the same time in the past.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Examples:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>I <strong><em>was cutting<\/em><\/strong> vegetables while he <strong><em>was grilling<\/em><\/strong> the steaks.<\/li>\n<li>Joey <strong><em>was playing<\/em><\/strong> on his phone while Timmy <strong><em>was running<\/em><\/strong> around in circles.<\/li>\n<li>What <strong><em>were you doing<\/em><\/strong> when your brother <strong><em>was sneaking<\/em><\/strong> into the house?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><em>Use #5<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>When describing an atmosphere that existed in the past.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Examples:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The moon <strong>was glowing<\/strong> brightly that night.<\/li>\n<li>The river <strong>was flowing<\/strong> rapidly last spring.<\/li>\n<li>When I walked into the restaurant, waiters <strong><em>were walking<\/em><\/strong> around aimlessly, and the hostess <strong><em>was talking<\/em><\/strong> on the phone.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><em>Use #6<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>When expressing irritation.
