So start with question 1. Read the fact slowly to make sure that you fully understand what it says. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p3\" style=\"padding-left: 90px\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #008000\"> Example: \u00a0Read question 1. Question 1) Chronobiology is the study of how living things have evolved over time.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"li3\"><span class=\"s1\">Then turn the statement into a question.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p3\" style=\"padding-left: 90px\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #008000\"> Example: Is chronobiology the study of how living things have evolved over time?<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"li3\"><span class=\"s1\">Next, use your <a href=\"https:\/\/magoosh.com\/ielts\/ielts-reading-rubric\/#techniques\">scanning and skimming skills<\/a> to find the information in the reading passage.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p3\" style=\"padding-left: 90px\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #008000\"> Example: In this reading passage, I scanned for the noun <strong>chronobiology<\/strong> and found this text: \u201c<strong>Chronobiology<\/strong> might sound a little futuristic \u2013 like something from a science fiction novel, perhaps \u2013 but it\u2019s actually a field of study that concerns one of the oldest processes life on this planet has ever known: short-term rhythms of time and their effect on flora and fauna.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"li3\"><span class=\"s1\">When you think you have found the answer, read the text carefully to determine if you think it is true\/false\/or not given.\u00a0If the answer to the question you formed is \u2018yes\u2019, then it is true.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>If your answer is \u2018no\u2019, then it is false.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>If you can\u2019t answer the question, then the answer is not given.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p3\" style=\"padding-left: 90px\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #008000\">Example: The reading passage uses the words \u2018<b>short-term<\/b> rhythms of time\u2019, whilst the question fact says \u2018how living things have <b>evolved over time\u2019<\/b>. Evolving<b> \u2018over-time\u2019 <\/b>refers to something that happens <b>long-term.<\/b> So this fact is FALSE.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"li3\"><span class=\"s1\">Questions will probably use synonyms rather than the words in the text.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p3\" style=\"padding-left: 90px\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #008000\">Example: Question 2 states the fact: \u201cThe rise and fall of sea levels affects how sea creatures behave.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The reading passage says: \u201cMarine life, for example, is influenced by tidal patterns.\u201d <strong>Sea creatures<\/strong> is used instead of <strong>marine life<\/strong>. Also, the <strong>rise and fall of sea levels<\/strong> is used instead of <strong>tidal patterns<\/strong>.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>So this fact is TRUE.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"li3\"><span class=\"s1\">Look out for words that qualify the sentence or make the sentence restrictive in some way, for example adjectives like \u2018only\u2019, \u2018little\u2019, \u2018all\u2019, \u2018some\u2019, \u2018always\u2019, \u2018never\u2019, \u2018sometimes\u2019 etc.,<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>as some questions will alter just that one word in the statement.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p3\" style=\"padding-left: 90px\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #008000\">Example: Question 4) states the fact. \u2018Circadian rhythms identify how we do different things <b>on different days.\u2019 <\/b>The reading passage says: \u2018When it comes to humans, chronobiologists are interested in what is known as the circadian rhythm. This is the complete cycle our bodies are naturally geared to undergo within the passage of a <b>twenty-four hour day<\/b>.\u201d Here <strong>different days<\/strong> and <strong>twenty-four hour days<\/strong> become qualify statements.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>We can easily see that this fact then is FALSE.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"li3\"><span class=\"s1\">If you find you are spending a long time looking for the answer to one question, then probably the information is not given, and that will be your answer.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p3\" style=\"padding-left: 90px\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #008000\">Example: Question 3 states the fact: &#8216;Most animals are active during the daytime.&#8217; The reading passage says: &#8216;Animals tend to be active or inactive depending on the position of the sun or moon. Numerous creatures, humans included, are largely diurnal \u2013 that is, they like to come out during the hours of sunlight. Nocturnal animals, such as bats and possums, prefer to forage by night. A third group are known as crepuscular: they thrive in the low-light of dawn and dusk and remain inactive at other hours.&#8217; Although the passage talks about when animals are active, it does not mention when most animals are active.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>So this answer is NOT GIVEN. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">Hopefully now that you know how some of the questions are stated and the techniques that you can use to find the right answer, you will whizz through the Reading Module.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>The &#8220;Other&#8221; Not-Given Question Type<\/h2>\n<p>A final word: be aware that IELTS Reading also features Yes\/No\/Not Given questions. These are subtly different from True\/False\/Not Given.
