How available is the IELTS in Each Country?

With any luck, you either one of the countries above, or are able to travel to one of them. But within an IELTS country, where do you go? How widely available is the IELTS in each country?

Obviously, this varies, depending on what country you’re in. In the United Kingdom, where Cambridge English is headquartered, the IELTS is available throughout most of the country.

In contrast, IELTS test centres are less evenly distributed in the United States. In the USA, there are entire states and regions that have few IELTS exam locations, or no IELTS test sites at all. At the same time, other states– California, for example– have several different IELTS testing offices.

Some smaller countries may have very few places where you can take the IELTS nationwide. Mongolia has only one IELTS test centre (in Ulanbaatar), and Ghana has just three IELTS exam locations (Tamale, Accra, and Kumasi). These are both relatively large nations. Unfortunately, in these and other countries, test-takers may need to travel a long way to take the IELTS, unless they live in or near a city with an IELTS testing location.

Where Are the IELTS Testing Centres?

IELTS Test Centres are more common in big cities, compared to small towns. Still, there certainly are some smaller towns that host IELTS test sites. In fact, in countries that lack big cities, mid-sized and smaller cities are the only option for taking the IELTS.

Fiji is one good example of this. Their two IELTS testing sites are in Suva and Nadi, both of which are relatively small cities.

Who Administers the IELTS Test Centres?

Most of the world’s IELTS exam locations are hosted by the British Council, a UK-based international English education organisation. The British Council, along with Cambridge English, is one of the official sponsors of the IELTS. The IDP, another official IELTS sponsor, administers IELTS tests around the world as well.

There are also quite a few third-party organisations that provide IELTS testing.

Often, the IELTS is administered on university campuses. Private English academies also sometimes host facilities where students can take the IELTS. In the United States, ELS English, a national chain of English language schools, administers the IELTS in many cities.

Sometimes companies that specialize in testing as assessment will also oversee IELTS testing. Precise Solutions, and assessment company in Toronto, is a good example of a testing company that hosts the IELTS.

Will You Have Different Experiences in Different IELTS Exam Locations?

Ideally, you should have the same testing experience no matter where you take the IELTS. The British Council, the IDP, and Cambridge work closely with local universities and partners such as ELS and Precise Solutions. The goal is to hold each test centre to the same standards. Unfortunately, there can be some inconsistencies. In rare cases, certain IELTS exam locations may have their own problems with technology, or may be in a noisy, crowded, or have other problems.

Usually though, testing conditions are reasonably similar, no matter where you go to take the IELTS. It’s rare for an IELTS exam location to be significantly “better” or “worse” than others.

Having done my test in one of the IELTS exam centres in ((( PARIS ))). Focus on Paris!
I can tell you and I shoulder all the responsibility that that centre was the worst one I’ve ever seen in all my life, the Listening test was totally horrible with very low-quality cd player, pencils and erasers were of a very cheap brand, the staff was so awful and much more! On the other hand, I did the exam in Amman, Jordan and the opposite is true! The best technology was used, the centre was staffed with an elite of people …etc
So excuse me, sir, your information is not accurate.

      Hi Bader,

I’m sorry to hear that you had such a bad experience in Paris! As we say in this blog post, “The goal is to hold each test centre to the same standards. Unfortunately, there can be some inconsistencies. In rare cases, certain IELTS exam locations may have their own problems with technology, or may be in a noisy, crowded, or have other problems.” We never said that all testing locations are going to be perfect–we mentioned that there are differences and that each location can have it’s own issues. I’m sorry to hear that the Paris testing center did not live up to their goal in your experience. If you would like, you can contact IELTS directly and tell them about your experience. They may be able to investigate the conditions of different testing centers.
