If you are planning to study in one of these universities, here is a list of IELTS requirement for top universities in Australia. After knowing the IELTS requirement, you can make a study plan, get started with IELTS Academic prep, and work hard to reach your goal!
University of Melbourne
For future undergraduate students in University of Melbourne, you need an overall IELTS score of 6.5 or more and no band lower than 6.0. In addition, students with an overall score less than 7.0 will be asked to take a diagnostic language test when they enroll at the university. This test doesn’t affect enrollment or program placement, but can be used to determine if a student should receive additional English support from the university during their studies.
For future postgraduate students, different graduate programs have different IELTS requirement. Most MA and PhD programs require a minimum overall score of 7.0. Some programs require a minimum overall score of 6.5, and the requirements for the scores on individual IELTS sections vary a good deal depending on the program. Check out the university’s graduate English requirements list to find out the requirement of your program.
University of Sydney
The standard IELTS requirement for undergraduate programs is an overall score of 6.5 or more and no band less than 6.0. However, there are a number of exceptions, where higher whole-test or band scores for IELTS may be required.
The standard IELTS requirement for graduate programs is an overall score of 7.0 or more and no band less than 6.0. However, many programs require a higher score than the university’s minimum requirement. Check out the official list of graduate program English requirements to find more information!
Australian National University
Diploma programs require an overall score of 6.0 and at least 5.5 in each element. Regular degree programs require an overall score of 6.5 and at least 6.0 in each element, and graduate law programs tend to require 7.0 for the whole exam, with at least a 6.0 in each element. Click its English language requirement page to get more details.
University of Queensland
Both undergraduate and graduate programs require an overall score of 6.5 and no band lower than 6.0 in each element. Some programs have a higher requirement on the IELTS, so look up your program’s admission details.
University of New South Wales
The standard IELTS requirement for undergraduate and graduate programs is an overall score of 6.5 and at least 5.5 in each element. However, there are many exceptions. To give just a couple of examples: Undergraduate business programs require a 6.5 whole-test score, and at least 6.0 in each element. Law graduate programs require a 6.5 overall with a minimum 6.5 in Writing and a minimum of 6.0 in all other bands.
To see all of the exceptions to this school’s primary IELTS standards, see this detailed breakdown of the University of New South Wales’ English language requirements.
Monash University
Monash University requires an overall IELTS score of 6.5 and a minimum score of 6.0 in each element. Some programs have a higher requirement. Check out the programs that you are interested in.
University of Western Australia
UWA’s standard undergraduate and graduate requirement is a minimum overall score of 6.5 and at least 6.0 in each part. However, a number of specific master’s and doctorate degrees require a higher score. Check out the official IELTS requirement list for programs that are exceptions to the general requirements listed above.
University of Adelaide
Whether you are applying to University of Adelaide as an undergraduate or graduate, the standard requirement is an overall band score of 6.5 and a minimum score of 6.0 in all elements. However, there are many exceptions for various graduate and undergraduate programs. Read this detailed list of program-level IELTS requirements for more information. Also know that if your English proficiency is below where it needs to be for the program you want to enter, you may be able to get conditional acceptance by taking extra classes in the University Adelaide’s Pre-Enrollment English program, which has its own alternative set of IELTS requirements.
Macquarie University
The minimum IELTS band score requirement for Macquarie University is 6.5, with a 6.0 in each element. However, many undergraduate and postgraduate courses have their own special IELTS requirements. To see the IELTS score you’ll need, go to Macquarie University’s English language requirements page and check the dropdown men us labelled “standard English requirements” and “special English requirements.”
University of Wollongong
University of Wollongong has no general IELTS requirement. You need to find your course and then click “international students” at the bottom to learn the specific IELTS requirement.
I had scored overall bandwidth 6 in ielts .my each band score is R6,w5,l6.5,s6…how much possibility is there for me to get admission… Apart from ielts score ,my academic performance is good ..I completed my bachelor with 71%..
Hi Sanjip,
Unfortunately, we don’t have nearly as much expertise and experience in graduate school admissions as we do with test prep, so I’m afraid we can’t be of much help. That said, I’d recommend directly contacting the schools/programs you’re interested in to see if they can offer any insight, or check out the programs’ websites to see if they have any info! This website is also a great place to start your research: Best Grad Schools.
I hope this helps, at least a little 🙂
Hi, Im really wondering whether I can get scholarship or not with 7 band score from ielts. As to my sections reading is 7 writing is 6 speaking is 7.5 listening is 7. 5. Thank you in advance
Hi Asrokhon,
Our expertise is in test prep, not admissions or scholarship advice, so I’m afraid that we aren’t the best people to answer this question. I encourage you to contact the admissions directors of your target universities to ask about their scholarship options and requirements. Good luck!
hii this is bhaskar i have got 6 overall band but in writing i have got 5 ,so can i get any college
Hi Bhaskar,
Our expertise is in test prep, not admissions advice. Keep in mind that this blog post only discusses a few universities. You should do your own research and determine the admissions requirements for other schools to see if your scores are high enough. Good luck!
Do the universities require the Academic IELTS or General?
Hi Varva!
The IELTS Academic exam is accepted by Australian universities, so long as you have a qualifying score (as seen in the score requirements listed in this post). IELTS General training, however, is not accepted by Australian universities… but is acceptable for many types of Australian migrant visas. (As a potentially useful additional note, the TOEFL is accepted both by Australian universities and Australian immigration.)
I have got overall 6 band …..listening 6….speaking 6.5….writing 6….reading 5…..i have done my graduation with 59 % how much possibility of to get my admission
It’s hard to get accepted into any major Australian universities if you have a 5 in any section. So you’ll ideally want to resit the exam and get a higher IELTS Reading score before you apply. As for your graduation at 59%, I recommend talking to admissions advisers at the universities you’re applying to, to see what 59% form your country would translate to in the Australian system.
Same pinch i also want ans
I have got overall 6 bands in ielts. In speaking 7, writing 6, reading 5.5, listening 6. Can i get an admission in universities?
Hi Sagar, congrats on taking the IELTS 🙂 We’re not admission experts here at Magoosh, so unfortunately, we can’t be of too much help here. With that in mind, I recommend looking up the IELTS score requirements for the schools/programs you’re interested in. If you can’t find that information in the admission section of the university’s website, I’d suggest contacting the school directly to see what their requirements are 🙂 I hope this helps, at least a little!
I got overall 6.5 Lis 7.5 Rea6.5 wri 5.5 speak5.5
My four yearbachelor percentage is 51.2..
Which University wiil be better for me in sydney? Please
With your lower writing and speaking scores, that’s a tricky question. It would depend a lot on what kind of graduate program you want to enter, and whether or not you’re open to conditional acceptance. (In conditional acceptance, you can get in with lower IELTS scores, but may need to take English classes before you begin your degree courses.)
Sydney is a relatively small higher education market. So in your case, I would recommend making a list of the grad programs you are interested in in Sydney (it will likely be a short list), and then checking the requirements for each. 🙂
I am a biology student with ielts 6.5 no less than 6 in each band with 76% in higher seondary education. Is there any subject that i am allowed to study in australia. I jst want to study.
Hi Anu 🙂
Thanks for your question! Unfortunately, we don’t have nearly as much expertise and experience in college admissions as we do with IELTS prep, so I’m afraid we can’t be of much help. Hi, I am a nursing student my overall ielts score is 5.5 and not less than 5.0 in each. Is there any higher school that can give me admission
5.5, with 5.0 in some sections, is a bit low. With those lower IELTS scores, your best shot at nursing school would be to look for an English-language nursing degree program in a non-English speaking country. (Many universities outside the English-speaking world offer English-language degree programs.)
You may also want to look into options for conditional acceptance. Under conditional acceptance, you can be accepted into a degree program even though your English testing scores are lower than required. In this case, you’ll need to take some English classes before you begin your regular nursing classes. If that sounds like it might be a good choice for you, read Magoosh’s article about TOEFL scores and conditional acceptance— the rules are exactly the same for IELTS scores.
Hi I have score 6 in overral and 6.5L,5R,6W,6S.I want to know which university would accept this marks for bachelor of nursing
Hi Chinu,
Congratulations on finishing your IELTS! We do not offer admissions services and we are not experts on schools you can enter with X score. I suggest asking nursing communities online and starting to research good programs for nursing to see what they require. Good luck! 🙂
Hi , I HAVE Scored Ielts Overall 5. so will i be able to apply any where for highers
5 is a little bit low. However, there are certainly some decent mid-tier universities that will accept students who got a 5 on the IELTS. This is especially true if you apply to an English language degree program in a non-English speaking country. (Such as a bachelors in engineering, taught in English, but hosted at an Italian university. You get the idea. 🙂 )
With an IELTS score of 5, you may also be able to get conditional acceptance, even at a top university. If you receive conditional acceptance, you’ll be able to enter a degree program. But you’ll also be asked to take some classes that help you improve your English. For more info about conditional acceptance, check out this article on the Magoosh TOEFL Blog. (Conditional acceptance works in the same way for TOEFL and IELTS scores!)
HI,
I got overall 6 band in IELTS, whereas R5.5, S6, W5.5, L6.5. and I’m having good academic score 8.4 CGPA with 2 yrs of experience . Could you suggest me some good universities for this score.
As you can see in this post, a 6.0 band IELTS will get you into many of the top universities listed here. With that decent GPA and some relevant work experience, you’ll also have a shot at most lower-ranking top schools in Australia, and all of the mid-ranked schools.
I secured overall 7 marks in IELTS Exam . I am BE – Information Technology from Pune University . I have one year Post Graduation Experience in Top class IT company in Pune.
I wish to join Australian University for PG course ( MS) in 2017-18.
Which university having high rank in IT Engineering suits me well? which are the course available?
These are some very good questions. To be honest, I’m not completely sure, since Magoosh tends to focus its content and advice on American, Canadian, and UK schools. What I do know is that the Australian Education Network has a ranking system that’s well-trusted by international students. I recommend starting your research on the top engineering schools at their rankings page.
As for your score– a mark of 7 throughout each section of the test is quite good and should serve you well at any school you apply to. 🙂
My overall band score is 6 but i got on reading and speaking. So is it necessary to take english course in australia?
i got 5 on reading and speaking***
With that score, you’d likely need to do some English courses before beginning regular degree classes… at least in the top universities on this list. (Wollongong’s policies do vary from program to program, but they generally want more than 5 in Reading for any major.)
However, there’s a chance that some lower-ranked Australian unis may accept you with your current scores. Check around, but be prepared to possibly take some extra English in Australia before you begin your regular studies.
Hi I just passed my 12 with 65% and I got 5.5 in IELTS having 5.5 in each section so will I get visa for Australia to study diploma??
Hi Shirley,
Have you contacted any admissions departments to get their input? Immigration and visa requirements are not our speciality, and the university will know the most current requirements and concessions available.
Hii
I got overall ( 6 ) bend in ielts but in speaking i got only ( 5 ) bend so i am alligible for admission in Australian university
The top Australian universities in this list need more than a 5 in Speaking. However, there may be other Australian universities that would take you. I recommend checking other Australian universities to see if you meet their standards. And of course, be ready to retake the IELTS if need be. If you can raise your Speaking band by just one point, many more options will open up to you.
I got austalia Melbourne University visa or not
S-6, l-6, w-6, r-5
In 12th 64.2%
In english 71
To my knowledge, Melbourne has a strict requirement of at least 6 in all individual IELTS sections. So you’ll probably need to improve your IELTS Reading score. Still, it wouldn’t hurt to contact Melbourne admissions and ask them if they can consider you, based on your graduation at 64.2% and your 71 in English. The worst they could say is “no.”
i scored overall 7 with bandscore in listening 8.5 speaking 8 reading 6 and writing 5.5. can i apply for the university for nursing??
Hi Nishant,
The answer is “maybe” but it depends on each university! Gave you done some research into what those specific programs are asking for? That will be your best source of information. 🙂
Hello i got overall bandscore 7. L-8.5 S-8 R-6 but 5.5 in writing.I want to apply for nursing but couldnot get any university that accept 5.5 in one band. What should i do? Do you know some lists of university that accept only overall band score??
My ielts score is 7 (L:6.5, R:7, W:6.5, S:7)..My graduation was from English Langugage & Literature..Would I be recommended for MBA with scholarships?
Hi Mahfuza,
This really depends on the individual university and their requirements! I recommend that you do some research for your target schools and contact them to ask about potential scholarships.
Hi my ielts score is 5.5 nd recently completed my senior secondry class nd i got 80% marks . I am applicable for addimission in unversites.
Hi Harshdeep,
A 5.5 band overall is often not quite high enough to get you where you want to be, so I would advise working toward a re-write. Your 80% marks are strong, but the IELTS score is sometimes not a negotiable part of your application package. Wishing you luck! 🙂
Hi buddy I m having overall 6 band and in one module I m having 5.5 band. I got offer letter frm CQU Melbourne for MEM. I did my engineering with 6.5 CGPA . So I just want to make sure there is not any problem with visa, while my visa procedure. Plz let me know what kind of possibilities are there??
We are not visa experts and you should direct these questions straight to an immigration authority and the university itself. These are too important to trust a test prep company to answer! Good luck. 🙂
I got 6.5 in ielts with listening 8.5 Speaking 6.5 Writing 6 and Reading 5.5 will get admission for bachelors
Hi Raj,
Unfortunately, we don’t have nearly as much expertise and experience in college admissions as we do with IELTS prep, so I’m afraid we can’t be of much help. With that in mind, I’d recommend directly contacting the colleges that you’re interested in to see if they can offer any insight, or check out the university websites to see if they have any info! I hope that helps at least a little!
I’ve got 5.5 overall in ielts test
Listening 6
Writing. 6
Reading. 5
Speaking. 5.5
Can I apply for Australia?
As you can see, those scores don’t work for Australia’s very top schools. However, there are some low-ranked but still-good schools you may have a chance with. The one thing that sticks out, though, is your Reading score of 5. If you can retake the IELTS and boost your Reading to 5.5, you’ll be able to get into many additional schools. With your current scores, your school options are somewhat limited, and you might be asked to take some English classes first before you start your regular degree classes. Check with individual Australian schools to see what their rules are.
I scored overall score of 7.5 in ILETS… With Reading 8.5 listening 7.5 speaking 7 and writing 6.5 . I hv done my bachelors in nursing nd working from last one year…. I want to apply fr masters degree in Australia pls suggest me d course and university m eligible for applying with dis score
Hi Milan,
Our expertise is in test prep, not admissions advice, so I’m afraid that we can’t help you much! I recommend that you start with this list and then do some research on your own. Sorry we can’t be more helpful–maybe others can give you some advice 🙂
I got 5.5 overall score but i got 5 in reading and writing but i got 6.5 in listening and 6 in speaking. And i have completed my diploma in 1st division. So shall i got any collge in Australia
Hi Jashanpreet,
Our expertise is in test prep, not admissions advice, so I’m afraid I can’t give you the best answer to this question. I recommend that you look up the requirements for individual schools and make sure that you have reached the IELTS requirement. If you have any questions, you should contact the schools directly. Good luck! 😀
I had scored overall band 6 in ielts .6.5 in speaking and 5.5 in rest of the module .I have done my BTech with 74% .how much possibility is there for me to get admission for masters .
Those scores are on the lower end for Masters degree program in acceptance in Australia. However, graduate admissions depend on many different factors, and you may have a chance of acceptance in some programs. My advice would be to carefully look at the admissions websites for programs you’re interested in. You may want to also directly contact admissions offices for advice on whether you can be considered. And of course, a retake wouldn’t hurt. If you can raise your scores by at least half a band in the Writing, Listening, and Reading, your chances of admission increase considerably.
I had scored overall band 6 in ielts .6.5 in reading and 5.5 in rest of the module .I have done my bachelor degree in accounting with grade excellent with honor (90.4%) from Alexandria university.how much possibility is there for me to get admission for masters .
Hi Mohamed,
Our expertise is in test prep, not admissions advice, so I’m afraid I can’t provide you with a great answer here. There are a lot of factors that go into the decision of admissions for a master’s degree. Your IELTS scores are in the range of some of these universities, but remember that these are only the top universities in Australia–there are plenty of other places that may have different requirements! I recommend that you contact the schools directly to see what they look for in their graduate students 🙂 Good luck!
hello sir or mam , i have completed my graduation(BCA) with 68% in 2016 and got 5.5 ielts band score even i have one and a half year of job experienced as a computer operator in court …am i eligible for australia ??
Hi Sunny,
Our expertise is in test prep, not admissions advice, so I’m afraid I can’t provide any more guidance than what we already wrote in this blog post! I suggest that you use this blog post as a starting point and then do some more research into specific schools to see what their IELTS requirements are! Good luck 🙂
Hello sir,I have completed my post graduation in msc.it with 65% and my overall band score is 6 ( speaking and writing 6, reading and listening 5.5). Plz sir tell me there is any possibility to go in Australia for study.if any requirements the what courses is available in there.
First, congrats on taking the IELTS! Our expertise is in test prep, not admissions advice, so unfortunately I can’t provide any tips beyond what we discuss in this blog post. I suggest that you start your search here and then move on to see what other universities might fit your interests and profile 🙂 Good luck!
I got overall 6.5
7.5 in listening
7in speaking
6 in writing
5 in reading
A very respectable score overall! Still, you may want to get your Reading score up by one band to maximize your chances for university acceptance.
My overall score is 6. Writing 6, listening 6, speaking 6, and reading 6. Do you think I have any chance to be accepted in PhD degree in civil engineering at an australian university!?
With a 6 in IELTS rather than a 6.5, it would probably be a little difficult to get into most civil engineering doctorates in Australia. However, it doesn’t hurt to check around and see if there’s a program that may accept you. There are only 43 universities in all of Australia, and of those, only some have the program you’re looking for. So it’s very possible to go through the official full list of Australian unis, check for civil engineering PhDs, and check the requirements. You may even want to email or call admissions offices and see if they can accept you with your score, even if they list a higher minimum. If you have a strong professional background or some peer-reviewed research to your name, it increases your chances of acceptance. Of course, retaking the IELTS to see if you can boost your score by half a band may be worthwhile as well.
Hello,I have got overall band of 6. Each band nkt less then 6 L6 R6 W6 S6.5. And i have completed my PCL nursing and the percentage is 71%. Do I have any chance for diploma leading bachelor in nursing.
Hi Bidya,
Our expertise is in test prep, not admissions advice, so I’m afraid that I don’t have a good answer for your question! I recommend that you contaact some schools directly and research their requirements. Good luck!
Respected Sir/Mam
I want to proceed my bachelor level . My IELTS score is 6 ( L-6.5, R-5.5, W-6, S-5.5 ) .I have just completed my +2 level from science faculty. How much possibility is there for me to get admission in nursing? Is that true that from June/july only the students scoring overall 7 can apply for nursing? And is that true that embassy will been rejecting visa from june/july?
Hi Diva,
Our expertise is in test prep, not admissions advice, so I’m afraid that I don’t have a good answer to your question! We provide this general information for students who are applying for schools and taking the IELTS, but we don’t have any specific information about the requirements for different nursing schools or the visa process. Sorry about that! I recommend that you research the specific schools that you are interested in to determine their IELTS scores for nursing. Good luck!
helllo sir , i got 5.5 band in ielts
i passed 12th
can i apply for australia
Hi Mahendra,
According to the information in this blog, these universities all require a band score of at least 6 to be considered for admission. However, these are only a few of the universities in Australia! I recommend that you research some more universities to see if other ones accept a band score of 5.5. Good luck!
Hello sir, I am Amandeep kaur my ielts score R 6,W 6,L 6.5 ,S 5.5, B.C.A completed from Dr C.V.Raman university bilashpur can i apply for M.C.A with previous university
Hi Amandeep. Although those scores are good for the most part, your 5.5 in speaking may be a bit low for Australian universities. If you can get that up to a 6, that will increase your chances of acceptance significantly. Still, there may be some universities and programs that would accpet your scores as-is. Check with individual schools to see if they allow for a 5.5 in Speaking, or can consider you in spite of your 5.5 based on your past academic record and work history.
Hello sir
My overall ielts score is 6 which consists
Listening 6.5
Writting 6
Speaking 6
And reading 5
And my academic percentage is 60.10
And i want to apply for Australia
Do i have chance to get admission ?
It’s a little harder to get into an Australian university with a 5 in any one given section. But you may be able to find a mid-tier school that can accept you, or a higher ranked school that could accept under certain circumstances. Your past academic percentage can be taken into account as well. Whether or not a 60.10 will offset your low IELTS reading score depends on what country you’re form. For instance, a 60.10 is impressive in the Indian system, with the way the Indian scales work. But a 60.10 from South Korea (as just one example) would be equivalent to low marks in Australia.
I recommend checking with universities to see the equivalent of your marks by Australian standards, and to see if your combination of academic record and IELTS score can gain you acceptance.
Hey..my overall ielts band is 5.5 ..that is soeaking 5.5, reading 5.5, listening 5.5 and writing 6..what are the courses that i could join for?please be kind enough to leave a reply
I can tell you that you could likely get conditional acceptance at any Australian university that allows that. (In conditional acceptance, you are asked to take a semester or two of English language classes before you begin your regular degree courses.)
While 5.5 is low by Australian University standards, it looks like there may be some universities that would accept you at your current level without making you take extra English classes. You’ll find some promising leads in this document of IELTS requirements for different Australian universities. Notice that the document lists several universities as able to accept you with your IELTS scores. You’ll want to double check the website of each university, of course– I know for a fact that some of the info in the document is up-to-date, but other information may be incorrect or outdated.
overall is 6.5 but i got 5 in speaking.. is there any chance ..?
I would say… probably. You probably have a chance because many universities are willing to be flexible on IELTS scores, especially if the rest of your application is strong. And there may be some mid-tier Australian universities that accepted a lower individual section score as well.
I would also recommend retaking the test, though. If you can get your Speaking score up by even half a band, that would open a lot more doors for you.
I take the IELTS and I get 5 score and I Know this Score is very less
I want to apply for student visa by this band score they give me visa??
As long as you don’t have less than 5.0 in any one section, there are some Australian universities that will accept you. If that’s the case, carefully read through this document to find promising unis, but be sure to double check with the actual unis to confirm their current standards.
If you have less than a 5.0 in an individual section, you’ll probably need to retake the IELTS before you can get into a regular degree program in Australia. As for what the immigration office itself would say, to my knowledge Australian Immigration will give a visa to anyone who is accepted into university. I don’t think AU immi would have its own separate IELTS standards that you also have to meet. But you may want to also check with universities you apply to, and ask them if immigration might hold you to a 5.0 even if you’ve been accepted. (Again though, I think that’s unlikely.)
I got overall 6 band in IELTS, whereas R6, S5.5, W5.5, L6.5. and I’m having academic(BBA) score 2.4 GPA with 1 yrs of experience . Could you suggest me some good universities for this score.i wanna studied MPA in Australia.
For that question, I’d refer you to this online PDF. This is a quick overview of the IELTS requirements (by whole test and by individual section) for every major university in Australia. I recently fact-checked this document, and most of the information is up-to-date. For any promising universities from that document, you’ll want to double-check the info on the actual uni website. But this should get you pointed in the right direction.
I had 7.5 overall (8 on listening, 8.5 reading, 6 for writing and 7 for speaking). I’m from Serbia and I have a Medical School Diploma for nurse (medical tehnician). Despite my score, immigration said that i need to do it again, because i need to have score of 7 for each part of the test. My goal is to enroll university in order to work there like a nurse. Can you give me any advice or solution!
First, congratulations on such a good IELTS score. Second, I’m sorry to hear that Australian Immigration turned you away. Were you actually accepted into a university, and they still turned you away? If your answer to that is “yes,” then I recommend contacting the school that accepted you and seeing if they can work with immigration and make sure you get a student visa. And if immigration turned you away before you got to apply to any school, I recommend applying to a university that accepts your IELTS scores, then coming back to immigration with the acceptance letter.
If all else fails, though, go for a resit of the IELTS. Your overall skills seem strong, and it sounds like you have a good chance of boosting your writing score with some extra study.
I have overall result of IELTS 5.5 band.I get six band on writing and speaking and five band on reading and listening.please i need your support for the university given admission to help me on search.
Hi Yonas,
Our expertise is in test prep, not admissions services, so I’m afraid that we can’t really help you with this request! I recommend that you start with this list and start to research schools to see which one fits your profile and interest. Good luck!
I am a maxillofacial surgeon from India planning to apply for the fellowship in Paediatric Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery at Royal Children’s Hospital for 1year. I received an overall IELTS score of 7.5 ,with listening & reading of 8 each & writing at 6.5 & speaking at 7.Is this score sufficient to consider me for the fellowship.
Fellowship standards can vary and aren’t always widely published. So to answer that question, I would recommend directly contacting Royal Children’s Hospital and asking them.
I have score overall 6 S=5 R=6.5 W=6 L=5.5. I need to improve please help me.

Hello I got 4.5 in reading ielts and overall I have 6 marks so is there any possibility in any course for me. And will I get visa in Australia?
Hi Jack,
Our expertise is in test prep, not admissions and visa advice, so I’m afraid I can’t provide any specific recommendations for you. You can look up visa requirements for Australia here, and I recommend that you start to do some research on different universities to find one that fits your needs. According to this chart, the minimal test score for visa purposes is a 5.5, so you may have to improve the reading score.
If you’re looking for high quality and affordable test prep, I encourage you to check out the Magoosh Premium Program— we guarantee that you will get a total band score of 7 if you complete our comprehensive IELTS program 🙂
I have score overall=5.5 in R5.5 L5.0 W5.5 S6.0 so is there any possibility in any course for me in australia
Hi Sajan,
Our expertise is in test prep, not admissions advice, so I’m afraid that I can only repeat the information provided in this blog post! All of these universities require an overall band score of at least 6.0, but you can research other universities that might have a lower requirement. I recommend that you do some research on your own and see if you can find a university that fits your needs. Good luck 🙂
In my second exam i have score overall=5.5 in R5.5 W6.0 L5.5 S5.5 so any good option for me
I got 6 in listening, 6.5 in speaking, 5.5 in writing and 5 in reading… Will I get enrollement in any of the colleges in Australia? I have completed my bachelor s degree…
Thank you
Hi Nima,
Our expertise is in test prep, not admissions advice, so I’m afraid I don’t have any information beyond what we wrote in this blog post. Many of the universities listed here require an overall band score of at least 6.0 and at least a 5.5 in each section, so you may have to research other universities to see if you meet their requirements. Good luck!
Hi! I got overall score 6 with 7.5 in Listening 6 on speaking and writing but 7 in reading
Can you please name me or suggest me some colleges or universities in Australia that would accept me?
First, I’ll tell you that those are good enough scores that many different Australian universities could be open to you, including ones listed in this post.
Additionally, Kabita, this online PDF provides an excellent list of Australian universities and the IELTS scores they accept. Read that list carefully. Then, once you’ve found your list of possible universities, look directly on the school websites to check for any updates in policy. (The document is good, but not 100% guaranteed to be up to date.)
Hi sir,
l was appeared in IELTS exam since a month ago , unfortunately l scored overall 5.5 only ( L5 R6 W5 S5 ).Is there any chances of acceptance by the college for Diploma in IT course. And my academic qualification ( +2) is 74% .
Hi Sitesh,
Our expertise is in test prep, not admissions, so I’m afraid that we aren’t the best people to ask about this issue. It looks like your score does not meet the minimum requirements for the schools that we mention in this article, but there are many other schools in Australia. I recommend that you look at other universities and research their minimum requirements. It’s also a good idea to email the admissions director directly to see if they have any more information. Best of luck!
i have 5.5 overall bands in listening -6 speaking-6 reading-5.5 writing-5 can i apply for australia
We’re not admission experts here at Magoosh, so unfortunately, we can’t be of too much help here. With that in mind, I recommend looking up the IELTS score requirements for the schools/programs you’re interested in. Check out your school’s admissions page, and contact the school directly if you can’t find that information! All of the schools listed here are the top schools in Australia, so there may be more schools that accept lower overall band scores. Good luck 🙂
Hi, i am umair from Pakiatan.i completed my bachelors and masters from pakistani university where medium of instruction was english, i have been working with the same university for more than 6 years with the capacity of assistant professor. Now i have got confirmation of enrollment from university of wollongong for phd studies in advance manufacturing under HEC-UOW joint scholarship program, instead of IELTS i submitted english proficiency certificate to university. My question is that do i need IELTS score for visa purpose?
That’s a good question, but a tricky one. The relationship between Australian universities and Australian immigration (the government office that actually issues your visa) can be inconsistent. Often, a university acceptance letter is good enough for Australian visa purposes. But in certain cases, immigration may ask for an IELTS score even if your university hasn’t asked for one. Wollongong itself should know what the case is for you. So I’d say contact the program that’s accepted you, and ask them if you still need to show an IELTS score to immigration. It may not hurt to check with the immigration office as well.
I’ve done MBA in 2012. Having relevant experience. IELTS WITH 6 point not less than 5.5. Can I apply for study visa in Australia?
Hi Sunil,
Our expertise is in test prep, not immigration advice! You will have to look up the Australian visa requirements on their immigration website. This website might help as a starting point: https://www.ielts.org/en-us/what-is-ielts/ielts-for-migration/australia

Hi Hamza,
Our expertise is in test prep, not admissions or scholarship advice, so I’m afraid that we aren’t the best people to answer this question. According to the information in this blog post, most of these universities require at least a 5.5 in each section to qualify for admission; however, there are many more universities in Australia! I recommend that you keep doing some research and find admissions information for other schools. Good luck!
reading and writing 5.0 listening 5.5 speaking 6.5 all over 5.5 .can i apply for undergraduate programs?
Those scores are on the lower end. Offhand, I don’t know of any Australian Universities that would accept you, although there may be some. Check with individual universities about your current scores. Or try for a retake. If you cam get your overall score up half a point to 60, many Australian schools will open up to you.
Hi
My over all band is 6
Speaking 6.5
Listening 6.5
Writing 5.5
Reading 4.5
I did diploma in nursing.
So am i eligible for nursing degree courses?
HI Rceey,
Our expertise is in test prep, not admissions advice, so we’re not the best people to answer this question! I recommend that you do some research into nursing schools to learn about their admissions requirements. You’ll notice that many of these universities require that all sections be above a certain level, so you may have some trouble with the R 4.5 score.
If your scores are low, you may also want to look into options for conditional acceptance.
I have got overall 6 band in ielts exam(R5.5,S6,L6,W5.5)and I have done my 12th last year.
Can i apply for Australia
Hi Harman,
You will have to look up the individual requirements for the universities you would like to apply to. I’m afraid that we aren’t experts in admissions, so we can’t be of much help here. Good luck!
Hey my name is Ahmed Hassan I really want to study in one of Australia university and then to graduate if possible I want to live there so my question is that Ielts certificate is accept in Australia universities please and please reply
I have scored overall IELTS with 6 band and individual L-6.5 R-6 W-6 S-6. can i get admission in any university in Australia for International Business course.
As you can see in this post, Your IELTS scores can get into Australian National University, including their international business program. A number of other lower-ranked (but still good) Australian universities would likely accept you. You’ll want to double-check the admissions requirements of other Australian schools. But you will very likely find a number of possibilities.
my overall score is 6 and L6, W6, R6 & S6.My aggregate 65%. I would like to know iam eligible for which universities and i would like do masters on big data whether it has scope or not.
Our expertise is in test prep, not admissions advice, so I’m afraid we aren’t the best people to answer this question for you! I recommend that you use this blog post as a starting place to do some research about the schools that fit your interests and profile 🙂 Good luck!
Hi.

My graduation score is 82%.
Can i get addmission in university in Australia.
It’s likely that some Australian universities would consider you for admissions. For possible leads, carefully read this web document on Australian uni IELTS requirements. Once you see a university int hat document, be sure to contact that university, to make sure the info you saw int he document really is accurate. Good luck!
Hello, i’m ashita. I scored a 6.5 in IELTS. I’m looking for undergraduate courses my aim is uni of melbourne howsoever. I scored R-6, W- 6.5, S- 7.5, L – 6.5 . Can you please let me know whether there band matters in undergraduate courses or not. I’m aiming for theatre or communication (something in literature bascially)
To the University of Melbourne, individual band scores do matter n undergraduate courses somewhat. However, as long as you have a 6.5 or higher for the whole test and a 6 or higher for each individual section, your scores will be acceptable at U Melbourne. It looks like you already meet that standard. Congratulations! 🙂 (But be sure to double-check with U Meloborune admissions, just to make sure there haven
t been any changes or updates to requirements since this article was written.)
Hai!!! My over all band score is 6 and I got 6.5 in speaking and writing and 5 in listening and 5.5 in reading. Will I be able to ge a admission in any university with this band score. Please help me out if so
Offhand, it sounds like you could get into University of the Sunshine Coast with those scores, and would probably be eligible for some additional universities. (See this document for reference, but be sure to check directly with any schools listed on the document, so that you get the most up-to-date admissions requirements.)
Overall 7 with reading 8,listening 7, writing 6.5 and speaking 5.5
Can I study in Australia
Yes! Although the universities in this list might not accept you, Australia has many other lower-ranked but still-good schools that would take you in. Check various university admissions websites for their exact requirements, and I think you’ll find many that are a good match for you.
Hey I got overall 6bands with 5.5 in speaking and scored 86 percent in 12th CBSE board and 86 marks in English
So can I get admission in top university of Australia
Those scores are a little on the lower side for Australia’s very top universities. However, your scores could get you into many other good-quality universities in Australia, and not just the universities on this list. Check around, and I’m sure you’ll find a school that will gladly take you in. 🙂
Hi .
My overall band is 5.5 not less than 5.5 in each module .I got 8.6 cgp in b.pharmacy .I m eligible for Master’s course with this band score
Please help me out.
Hi Kajal,
At that level of score, you likely do have a chance at some Master’s programs in Australia. Exactly which programs? Hard to say, since standards vary from program to program. But if you check around, you should find programs that would take you. To find out which programs you’re eligible for, contact prospective universities or check their websites.
I have 5.5 in all the bands n want to get admission in master .is there possibility?
Hi Ajaya,
Our expertise is in test prep, not admissions advice, so I’m afraid we aren’t the best people to answer this question. I recommend that you use this list as a starting point and research other universities to determine their admissions requirements. Good luck!
I have got overall 4 can i apply higher education for australia
Hi Bijay,
Unfortunately, I do not believe a 4 would leave you eligible for immigration under Australian rules. You should devote your time to preparing for a retake.
I have secured overall 6.5 and I got 6 in writing & speaking while in Reading & listening it is 6.5 .Can i get admission in any Australian university for bachelor of nursing.
With those scores, you likely could get into many of Australia’s undergraduate nursing programs. You’ll want to check with individual schools to make sure you meet all of the admissions criteria, of course! 🙂
hello. my score are
reading 6.5
listening 6.5
writing 5.5
speaking 6
overall 6.
and i have 76% in +2. will i get admission for nursing in asutralia??
With those scores, it seems likely that some of the undergraduate nursing programs in Australia would take you in. the more competitive schools might be harder to get into, but it doesn’t hurt to check with them. And it would definitely be worth your while to investigate good mid-tier universities that offer the nursing major. 🙂
Hi I have done my gradution in 2014 nd from 2014 to 2016 I have did Practice under CA and from 2016 to till now I m working with a bank my ielts score is 6 not less then 5.5 Can I apply
Hi Priyanka,
Our expertise is in test prep, not admissions advice, so I’m afraid we aren’t the best people to answer this question. Several of these universities require an overall band score of 6 and not less than 5.5 in each section, so you can definitely apply to some of these schools! For more information, you should research the school’s admissions policy and reach out to their admissions counselors. Good luck!
Please I want to know I got overall 6, speaking 7.5, writing 6,listening 5,reading 4.5 I want to know if I can get admission in any undergraduate course or advanced course in diploma in Australia
Hi Sam,
Our expertise is in test prep, not admissions advice, so I’m afraid we aren’t the best people to answer this question. Many of these schools require a minimum score of 5.5 in each section, so you may have to re-take and improve this score for your best chance at admissions. However, I recommend that you do some research to find the specific admissions requirements for your target schools. Good luck!
my IELTS overall score is 5.5, Listening-5.5, reading-6, speaking-5.5 and writing-5. Can you suggest colleges in Australia
In all honesty, this PDF from Scribd is one of the best resources for an overview of your Australian schooling options based on IELTS scores. Check it out, and then be sure to double check on official university websites– most but not all of the info in that PDF is up-to-date.

Hi, i am from Nepal. I have 2.69 cgpa but I have D+ in math at grade 12 . Can i apply to study IT for bachlor. Is there any possibility of being regected from universities.
Hi Keshav,
There is always a chance of being rejected, but you are in the best position to select universities that will accept your qualifications for the field of study you want to pursue. Spend a few hours studying their admissions pages and understanding what they want in candidates. This will help you determine where you can be accepted!
I got overall 5.5 band. In writing 6 , listing 6 , speaking 5.5 and reading 5.
Also, I completed my B.com with 57% . Now can I take admission in any university in Australia ?
Hi Nishant,

Hi Khuram,

Hey I got 7.5 in listening, 6.5 in reading, 7 in speaking and 5.5 in writing. Can you please tell me if there is a possibility for me to get into an Institute which offers bachelors in Business?
With a lower Writing score like that, you’ll have to hunt carefully for the right school, likely a mid-tier public university. This document (via Scribd) offers a really good overview of Australian undergrad programs and their IELTS requirements. My advice is to find some universities on that list that may work for you. Then, double check those schools’ actual websites to make sure the info in the document is still up-to-date.
Hi I have got 6 overall band score in ielts with 6s .6l.5.5r.5.5w and graduation with 66% can I get admission in any college and university in Australia?
Those scores could likely get you into some Australian universities, with a good chance for acceptance into a smaller mid-tier public school. Your best guide to schools that might accept your scores would be this Scribd document. It really does provide a great list of Australian universities and their admissions standards.
Be sure to treat that document as a starting point, of course. When you find a promising university on that list, double check on the school’s real, official website to make sure the information from the Scribd document is current and accurate to actual policy.
sir , i got 6.5 on aggregate
R- 7

L-6.5
I want to apply for masters…. am i eligible?
Hi Arun!
We don’t have nearly as much expertise and experience in graduate school admissions as we do with test prep, so I’m afraid we can’t be of much help. With that said, your overall IELTS score meets the minimum requirement for graduate programs at some of these universities. However, the minimum band score for each section is 6.0 for nearly all of the universities on this list, so I’d recommend directly contacting any that you’re interested for more information. This website might help you:
IELTS Requirements in Australia
I got 5.5 band R5,L and W 5.5 and speaking 6
Can i apply fr Australia
Those scores are a little on the low side. However, they’re not so low that I’d recommend against applying. You may need to do some research on which universities would be the best fit for you, though. This Scribd document is a good place to start. Once you find some promising universities in that list, check with the schools directly to see if their current IELTS requirements will still allow you entry.
And of course, many Australian universities offer conditional acceptance to students with lower IELTS scores, allowing them to start out in English-as-Second language courses and then transition to regular degree coursework.

Our expertise is in test prep, not admissions or scholarship advice, so I’m afraid that we aren’t the best people to answer this question. Many of the schools in this blog post have a minimum score in each section. However, not all Australian universities are represented in this list–there could be plenty more that you would qualify for with these scores. hy sankalp here completed diploma in ece with 67%. and ielts 6 overall and 5.5 in R,L and 6 in W , S.
can u suggest uni for me.
Assuming that you go for undergraduate studies, your scores could likely get you accepted into University of the Sunshine Coast. Offhand, that’s the one good school in Australia I can think of that you’re eligible for. But there are likely quite a few other schools that would take you. I recommend checking out this document for a list of possible schools. From there, double-check with the schools themselves to make sure you have the most current and accurate admissions info. 🙂
please can i study bachelor with 5.5 band score in one of the universities in australia
Hi Haris!
A 5.5 band score is a little bit low, however, there are some schools in Australia where that may meet the minimum requirement. Here’s a good place to start your research. With that said, you may also want to look into options for conditional acceptance. Under conditional acceptance, you can be accepted into a degree program even though your English testing scores are lower than required. In this case, you’ll need to take some English classes before you begin your regular classes. If that sounds like it might be a good choice for you, read Magoosh’s article about TOEFL scores and conditional acceptance— the rules are exactly the same for IELTS scores.
Hope this helps!
Hi Kuangyan, Thank you for the information but I think there would be some universities that will accept 5.5 each and no less than 5.5. I just have to do some research I believe.
Hello Sir/Mam
I have a score of 7.5 in listening, 7 in reading, 5.5 in writing and 7.5 in speaking and a total of 7 in IELTS. I want to know can I do masters in data science from Australia?
Although your Writing score is a bit low, your overall scores make it likely that you could get accepted into a program in Australia somewhere. You’ll want to contact Masters in Data Science programs directly to see what each program’s specific requirements are, of course. But I’d say it’s definitely worth looking into which programs might accept you.
Hi
I applied for an Australian scholarship for 2020, got shortlisted and sat for IELTS Test. My overall IELTS score was 5 which consist of:

I have Diploma of Community Service Work from South Bank Institute of Technology, Australia. And now applied to Queensland University of Technology (QUT) to do Bachelor of Human Services.
I scored less than the required band mark of 6 by QUT and I am really trouble now. Will there be any chances of me getting the scholarship to Australia or not?
Hi Rose,
I recommend that you contact the university directly and ask them about their policies. I’m afraid we don’t have any information about Australian universities. Good luck!
