The rule is named after Guillaume de l&#8217;Hospital (or l&#8217;H&ocirc;pital), which is a French name, pronounced <em>low-pee-tal<\/em> (NOT <em>le Hoss-pih-tal<\/em>).<\/p>\n<div>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/magoosh.com\/hs\/files\/2017\/01\/Guillaume_de_lH\u00f4pital.jpg\" alt=\"Guillaume_de_l&#039;Hospital\" width=\"268\" height=\"326\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-8661\" srcset=\"https:\/\/magoosh.com\/hs\/files\/2017\/01\/Guillaume_de_lH\u00f4pital.jpg 268w, https:\/\/magoosh.com\/hs\/files\/2017\/01\/Guillaume_de_lH\u00f4pital-247x300.jpg 247w, https:\/\/magoosh.com\/hs\/files\/2017\/01\/Guillaume_de_lH\u00f4pital-25x30.jpg 25w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 268px) 100vw, 268px\" \/><\/p>\n<div style='width: 250px' class=\"aligncenter\">Guillaume de l&#039;Hospital<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h2>L&#8217;Hospital&#8217;s Rule<\/h2>\n<p>If <em>f<\/em>(<em>x<\/em>)\/<em>g<\/em>(<em>x<\/em>) has the form 0\/0 or &infin;\/&infin; when <em>x<\/em> = <em>a<\/em> is plugged in, then:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/magoosh.com\/hs\/files\/2017\/01\/Lhospitals_rule.jpg\" alt=\"L&#039;Hospital&#039;s Rule\" width=\"173\" height=\"51\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-8615\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In other words, take the derivative of the numerator (top) and the derivative of the denominator (bottom), and then try computing the limit.<\/p>\n<h3>Using L&#8217;Hospital&#8217;s Rule<\/h3>\n<p>In order to use l&#8217;Hospital&#8217;s Rule, you must first check to see that your limit has the right form.  <\/p>\n<p>First of all, it <em>must<\/em> be a fraction of two functions, <em>f<\/em>(<em>x<\/em>) \/ <em>g<\/em>(<em>x<\/em>) in order to apply the rule.  <\/p>\n<p>Secondly &mdash; and this is crucial! &mdash; when you plug in the given <em>x<\/em>-value, the fraction must either evaluate to 0\/0 or &infin;\/&infin;.  These are two types of <strong>indeterminate forms<\/strong>.  If your limit problem is not in an indeterminate form, then you can&#8217;t use this method directly.<\/p>\n<h3>Examples<\/h3>\n<p>Let&#8217;s see how l&#8217;Hospital&#8217;s Rule works in the following two examples.<\/p>\n<h4>Example 1<\/h4>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/magoosh.com\/hs\/files\/2017\/01\/Limit_Example1.gif\" alt=\"Limit Example 1\" width=\"100\" height=\"39\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-8665\" srcset=\"https:\/\/magoosh.com\/hs\/files\/2017\/01\/Limit_Example1.gif 100w, https:\/\/magoosh.com\/hs\/files\/2017\/01\/Limit_Example1-30x12.gif 30w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 100px) 100vw, 100px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>After plugging in <em>x<\/em> = 0, we find the indeterminate form, 0\/0.  So l&#8217;Hospital&#8217;s Rule can be used.  Just take the derivative of the top and the derivative of the bottom.  Afterwards, try plugging in the <em>x<\/em> value again.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/magoosh.com\/hs\/files\/2017\/01\/Limit_Example1_solution.gif\" alt=\"Limit Example 1 solution\" width=\"372\" height=\"43\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-8666\" \/><\/p>\n<h4>Example 2<\/h4>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/magoosh.com\/hs\/files\/2017\/01\/Limit_Example2.gif\" alt=\"Limit Example 2\" width=\"137\" height=\"42\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-8667\" srcset=\"https:\/\/magoosh.com\/hs\/files\/2017\/01\/Limit_Example2.gif 137w, https:\/\/magoosh.com\/hs\/files\/2017\/01\/Limit_Example2-30x9.gif 30w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 137px) 100vw, 137px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>L&#8217;Hospital&#8217;s Rule works just as well in limits as <em>x<\/em> &rarr; &plusmn; &infin;.  Notice, the indeterminate form this time is &infin;\/&infin;.<\/p>\n<p>But there&#8217;s another interesting feature about this example.  After using the rule once, the limit still has indeterminate form (&infin;\/&infin;).  Therefore, we can use the rule once again.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/magoosh.com\/hs\/files\/2017\/01\/Limit_Example2_solution.gif\" alt=\"Limit Example 2 solution\" width=\"370\" height=\"42\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-8668\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In general, l&#8217;Hospital&#8217;s Rule may be repeated as many times as necessary, as long as there is an indeterminate form at each stage.<\/p>\n<h2>Functions that are not Fractions<\/h2>\n<p>Sometimes a limit problem comes along that seems impossible to do.  Standard <a href=\"https:\/\/magoosh.com\/hs\/ap\/ap-calculus-exam-review-limits-continuity\/\">algebraic techniques<\/a> may not work.  If the function had a fractional form, then we could use l&#8217;Hospital.  But what if the function is not even a fraction?<\/p>\n<p>There are certain algebraic manipulations that can <em>force<\/em> an expression to be a fraction.  When done correctly, l&#8217;Hospital may be used on the result.<\/p>\n<h3>Forcing a Fraction<\/h3>\n<p>Here is an example in which we change a product into a fraction using a standard algebraic trick.<\/p>\n<h4>Example 3<\/h4>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/magoosh.com\/hs\/files\/2017\/01\/Limit_Example3.gif\" alt=\"Limit Example 3\" width=\"88\" height=\"29\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-8671\" srcset=\"https:\/\/magoosh.com\/hs\/files\/2017\/01\/Limit_Example3.gif 88w, https:\/\/magoosh.com\/hs\/files\/2017\/01\/Limit_Example3-30x10.gif 30w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 88px) 100vw, 88px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This time we didn&#8217;t start with a fraction.  But if you rewrite <em>x<\/em><sup>2<\/sup> = 1\/<em>x<\/em> <sup>-2<\/sup> using negative exponents, then we can force the function to take the form of a fraction.  Then use l&#8217;Hospital&#8217;s Rule on the result.  <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/magoosh.com\/hs\/files\/2017\/01\/Limit_Example3_solution.gif\" alt=\"Limit Example 3 solution\" width=\"431\" height=\"41\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-8672\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>Conclusion<\/h2>\n<p>When a limit problem involves a fraction of two functions, then try L&#8217;Hospital&#8217;s Rule.  Don&#8217;t forget to check whether it&#8217;s an indeterminate form first.
