But I\u2019m guessing that competitive academics is sort of your thing, so \u2026 congrats! <\/p>\n<p>You\u2019re already on the right track. Just like this baby.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/magoosh.com\/hs\/files\/2018\/06\/Screen-Shot-2018-06-12-at-11.45.51-PM.png\" alt=\"yale admissions -magoosh\" width=\"325\" height=\"200\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12817\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Right about now, you\u2019re probably in one of two situations:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>You haven\u2019t taken the SAT or ACT yet<\/strong> and you\u2019re just beginning to plan your college application strategy for next year, or even two years down the line.<\/li>\n<p><\/p>\n<li><strong>You took the SAT or ACT once already<\/strong>, and you\u2019re wondering if your score is good enough to be considered a <em>Yale<\/em> score.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\nEither way, you\u2019ve come to the right place!<\/p>\n<h2>How to Get Into Yale<\/h2>\n<p>Yale is the third oldest university in the United States, and a prestigious member of the Ivy League. <\/p>\n<p>Admission into Yale isn\u2019t for your average student. Yale adcoms carefully sift through thousands of undergrad applications each year (35,308 in 2019 alone), and almost every student that applies is academically stellar.<\/p>\n<p>Think of it this way: the Yale admissions committee need ways to narrow down a pool of over 35,000 applicants to form a freshman class of fewer than 2,500 students (<strong>2,224 for the 2019-2020 freshman class \u2013 only 6.3% of applicants were admitted<\/strong>). They have to be picky! (And let\u2019s be honest \u2013 they love the exclusivity.)<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/magoosh.com\/hs\/files\/2018\/06\/smarty.png\" alt=\"yale admissions -magoosh\" width=\"250\" height=\"380\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12823\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Once you&#8217;re admitted, Yale will give you your own set of fancy pants&#8211;for now you just need to focus on keeping your smarty pants in good shape: The more of these bullet points that describe you, the better chances of being accepted to Yale.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>You&#8217;re at or near the <strong>top of your high school clas<\/strong>s. <\/li>\n<li>You have <strong>extracurricular activities<\/strong> that demonstrate your leadership skills and social-mindedness.<\/li>\n<li>You have a <strong>unique background<\/strong> or point of view.<\/li>\n<li>You&#8217;re <strong>SAT\/ACT scores are exceptional<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>You have a <strong><em>very<\/em> high GPA<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Not all of these characteristics are under your control&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/magoosh.com\/hs\/files\/2018\/06\/Screen-Shot-2018-06-13-at-12.42.30-AM.png\" alt=\"yale admissions -magoosh\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-12820\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&#8230;but some of them can be! Starting with your test scores. <\/p>\n<h2>Yale SAT Scores<\/h2>\n<p>Each year, Yale releases interesting facts about its incoming freshman class. The Yale admissions details of the <a href=\"https:\/\/admissions.yale.edu\/sites\/default\/files\/class_profile_2022_fall.pdf\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Class of 2022<\/a> have been made publicly available, and has a lot of interesting and relevant information about where current Yale students have been scoring.  <\/p>\n<p>Here are the Yale SAT scores of the Class of 2022:<br \/>\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<table id=\"tablepress-164\" class=\"tablepress tablepress-id-164 tablepress-responsive\">\n<thead>\n<tr class=\"row-1 odd\">\n<th class=\"column-1\">SAT Score Range<\/th>\n<th class=\"column-2\">Evidence-Based<br \/>\nReading &amp; Writing<\/th>\n<th class=\"column-3\">Math<\/th>\n<\/tr>\n<\/thead>\n<tbody class=\"row-hover\">\n<tr class=\"row-2 even\">\n<td class=\"column-1\">760-800<\/td>\n<td class=\"column-2\">44.4%<\/td>\n<td class=\"column-3\">64.6%<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr class=\"row-3 odd\">\n<td class=\"column-1\">700-750<\/td>\n<td class=\"column-2\">41.7%<\/td>\n<td class=\"column-3\">23.8%<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr class=\"row-4 even\">\n<td class=\"column-1\">600-690<\/td>\n<td class=\"column-2\">13.3%<\/td>\n<td class=\"column-3\">10.8%<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr class=\"row-5 odd\">\n<td class=\"column-1\">below 600<\/td>\n<td class=\"column-2\">0.6%<\/td>\n<td class=\"column-3\">0.8%<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>As you can see, there isn\u2019t one magical, super-specific Yale SAT score that the adcoms are looking for. But, you can also see that approximately <strong>75% of the incoming freshman class scored above a 700 on each section of the new SAT.<\/strong> Out of the students who submitted scores from the old SAT, about 50% scored higher than 760 on each section. <\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s generally a good idea to aim for the 75th percentile of whatever school you&#8217;re applying to&#8211;so in this case you&#8217;d want to <strong>set your goal score around 780<\/strong> for each section. <\/p>\n<h2>Yale ACT Scores<\/h2>\n<p>Taking the ACT? Don&#8217;t worry, we haven&#8217;t forgotten you!<\/p>\n<table id=\"tablepress-225\" class=\"tablepress tablepress-id-225 tablepress-responsive\">\n<thead>\n<tr class=\"row-1 odd\">\n<th class=\"column-1\">ACT Score<\/th>\n<th class=\"column-2\">Admission Rate<\/th>\n<\/tr>\n<\/thead>\n<tbody class=\"row-hover\">\n<tr class=\"row-2 even\">\n<td class=\"column-1\">32\u201336<\/td>\n<td class=\"column-2\">87.0%<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr class=\"row-3 odd\">\n<td class=\"column-1\">27-31<\/td>\n<td class=\"column-2\">11.4%<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr class=\"row-4 even\">\n<td class=\"column-1\">below 27<\/td>\n<td class=\"column-2\">1.6%<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>For students who submitted ACT scores and were admitted to Yale in 2017, the <strong>83.6% (so about 4 out of every 5 admitted students) scored a 32 or above on the ACT<\/strong>. So to make your application competitive you definitely don&#8217;t want to go below a 32, and should probably think about setting your Yale ACT <strong>goal score around a 34 or 35<\/strong>. <\/p>\n<p>Keep in mind that Yale does NOT take\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/magoosh.com\/hs\/act\/latest-act-superscore-score-choice\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ACT superscores<\/a>\u00a0into consideration.<\/p>\n<h2>Yale GPA Average<\/h2>\n<p>Yale actually doesn&#8217;t officially report the GPAs of its admitted students&#8211;but based on data from more than 1,000 schools, <strong>the average GPA of a freshman at Yale is 4.19<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>As you probably are aware, high schools generally use a weighted GPA out of 4.0, meaning you would have to be taking plenty of AP or IB classes (and racking up A&#8217;s across the board) to be averaging a 4.19. (<a href=\"\/hs\/college-admissions\/how-to-calculate-gpa-grade-calculator\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Learn how to calculate your GPA here<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p>Yale doesn&#8217;t set a minimum GPA, nor do they re-weight GPA\u2019s to any standard other than what a school provides. However, the admissions committee does understand that every school and every grading system is different, so they&#8217;ll do their best to evaluate your scores fairly!<\/p>\n<h2>Yale Acceptance Rate<\/h2>\n<p>As we mentioned at the beginning of this post, the <strong>2019 Yale admissions rate was 6.3%<\/strong>. Yale looks at more than the numbers on your application to determine whether or not to admit you. You\u2019re not just a number on a page. There is no required score that you must earn in order to be admitted into Yale. Your GPA and difficulty of your high school classes, along with your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.transizion.com\/writing-yale-supplemental-essays\/?utm_source=Magooshadvice\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">personal statements<\/a>, extracurriculars, and unique persona also play a part. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.admitsee.com\/profile-detail\/327279?ref=magoosh&#038;utm_source=magoosh&#038;utm_medium=blog&#038;utm_campaign=series\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer sponsored\" target=\"_blank\">Bulldog20<\/a> (&#8217;20) provides some advice on how to emphasize these strengths in your application on AdmitSee: <\/p>\n<div class=\"mox\">&#8220;My activities in high school were sort of disparate (some involved writing, others politics, others working with children) so I tried to find qualities that applied to all of them (communicator, team player and leader) and emphasize those when talking about them. To prepare for interviews, I thought of stories that exemplified those qualities. I also tried to weave them into my common app and supplemental essays. When I met with my teachers to discuss my recommendations, the information I gave them also emphasized those qualities. Even though my application may not have seemed cohesive at first, the sum all of the parts gave a clear picture of me as a person.&#8221;<\/div>\n<h2>Yale Admissions: The Takeaway<\/h2>\n<p>Thanks for reading this far! <\/p>\n<p>If there\u2019s anything to take away from this post, let it be these two things:<\/p>\n<p>1.\tScores aren\u2019t everything\u2014<strong>you need a well-rounded application!<\/strong>\n<\/p>\n<p>2.\tYale admissions are competitive enough that <strong>your well-rounded application needs to include good standardized test scores.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>So how do you get those high scores?
