In fact limits provide the theoretic background on which the main tool of calculus, <strong>the derivative<\/strong>, is built.<\/p>\n<p>So it&#8217;s no surprise that limits show up on both the AB and BC versions of the AP Calculus exam.<\/p>\n<p>We won&#8217;t take time in this short article to review the formal definition of limit. Because the variable is heading toward infinity, all we have to do is a <strong><em>highest-order term<\/em><\/strong> analysis.  Now since the highest order term on top ( 3<em>x<\/em><sup>2<\/sup> ) has lower degree than the one on the bottom ( <em>x<\/em><sup>3<\/sup> ), the limit must be 0.\n<\/li>\n<li>Again this is a limit as <em>x<\/em> &rarr; &infin;, so use highest-order term analysis.  But this time, the top has a higher degree than the bottom.  Isolate the highest degree terms on top and bottom:\n<p>( <em>x<\/em><sup>7<\/sup> ) \/ ( <em>x<\/em><sup>5<\/sup> ) = <em>x<\/em><sup>2<\/sup><\/p>\n<p>Therefore, as <em>x<\/em> &rarr; &infin;, our function behaves like <em>x<\/em><sup>2<\/sup>.  So in the limit, the values simply grow without bound.  The limit is &infin;.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>Rounding out this trio of related examples, we have another limit in which <em>x<\/em> approaches one of the two infinities.  Using highest-order term analysis this time, we see that the degree of the top is the same as the degree of the bottom.  Let&#8217;s simplify.\n<p>( 7<em>x<\/em><sup>4<\/sup> ) \/ ( 5<em>x<\/em><sup>4<\/sup> ) = 7\/5<\/p>\n<p>This implies that as <em>x<\/em> &rarr; -&infin;, the function values get closer to the constant 7\/5.  That&#8217;s our limiting value!<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>Notice that plugging in <em>x<\/em> = 2 results in <em>nonzero<\/em>\/<em>zero<\/em>, so we know the answer will be infinite.\n<p>  When <em>x<\/em> is close to 2, but to the right of it, the top will be negative while the bottom is positive.  Therefore, the limit is -&infin;.\n<\/li>\n<li>Absolute values must be treated with care.  When <em>x<\/em> is less than -1, the quantity (<em>x<\/em> + 1) is negative. So you must switch the sign to get rid of the absolute value bars.\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/magoosh.com\/hs\/files\/2017\/12\/limit_prob7_ans.png\" alt=\"limit problem 7 answer\" width=\"303\" height=\"43\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-11909\" srcset=\"https:\/\/magoosh.com\/hs\/files\/2017\/12\/limit_prob7_ans.png 303w, https:\/\/magoosh.com\/hs\/files\/2017\/12\/limit_prob7_ans-300x43.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 303px) 100vw, 303px\" \/><\/li>\n<li>You can either adjust the limit so that it has the form (sin &theta;)\/&theta;, or just use <a href=\"https:\/\/magoosh.com\/hs\/ap\/what-is-lhospitals-rule\/\">l&#8217;Hospital&#8217;s Rule<\/a>.  The solution here uses the latter.\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/magoosh.com\/hs\/files\/2017\/12\/limit_prob8_ans.png\" alt=\"limit problem 8 answer\" width=\"315\" height=\"39\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-11910\" srcset=\"https:\/\/magoosh.com\/hs\/files\/2017\/12\/limit_prob8_ans.png 315w, https:\/\/magoosh.com\/hs\/files\/2017\/12\/limit_prob8_ans-300x37.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 315px) 100vw, 315px\" \/><\/p>\n<\/ol>\n<h2>Conclusion<\/h2>\n<p>Now that you&#8217;ve seen a number of common limits, you can be that much more confident going into the test.
