The data-based question, or DBQ, differs from typical essays in only one way &#8211; the inclusion of five to seven historical documents. Your goal is to read through each historical document, then write an essay that clearly answers the given prompt while demonstrating your overall understanding of APUSH content. The following sources for APUSH DBQ examples are helpful to review before <a href=\"https:\/\/magoosh.com\/hs\/ap\/apush-document-based-questions\/\">beginning your own writing<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>What should I look in each APUSH DBQ sample?<\/h2>\n<p>In each sample, study how each author:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>formulates a thesis<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>constructs an argument<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>analyzes historical documents<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>provides additional examples<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>uses evidence to support argument<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>synthesizes information<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>APUSH DBQ Example #1: AP College Board<\/h2>\n<p>College Board is always the best source for up-to-date information and resources. This <a href=\"https:\/\/secure-media.collegeboard.org\/digitalServices\/pdf\/ap\/ap-us-history-sample-responses-dbq-1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">APUSH DBQ sample is from 2016<\/a>, but provides three different variations of student responses. You can see <em>how<\/em> and <em>why<\/em> which writing sample scored best, as well as determine how to incorporate those elements into your own writing. (<a href=\"https:\/\/secure-media.collegeboard.org\/digitalServices\/pdf\/ap\/ap-united-states-history-exam-sample-responses.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Examples from 2015<\/a> are also available.)<\/p>\n<h2>APUSH DBQ Example #2: AP US History Notes<\/h2>\n<p>Although this site doesn\u2019t explain why each sample is successful, it does offer a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.apstudynotes.org\/us-history\/sample-essays\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">large selection of examples<\/a> to choose from. You can get a good sense of what type of writing goes into a high-quality essay. Read through both the DBQ and long essay examples. <\/p>\n<h2>APUSH DBQ Example #3: Kaplan Test Prep<\/h2>\n<p>Kaplan only provides <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kaptest.com\/study\/ap-us-history\/ap-u-s-history-document-based-question-example\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">one APUSH DBQ sample<\/a>, but does go through the essay point by point, explaining how the author develops a well-supported argument. Another good view into the inner workings of a quality writing example.<\/p>\n<h2>APUSH DBQ Example #4: Khan Academy<\/h2>\n<p>If you haven\u2019t already, visit Khan Academy. Khan\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=4rs8IC7TGpU\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Historian\u2019s Toolkit<\/a> is a four-part video series that not only explains how to approach the DBQ, but also deconstructs the thinking behind a question example. Definitely worth a look.<\/p>\n<h2>APUSH DBQ Example #5: Apprend<\/h2>\n<p>Although rather lengthy, the <a href=\"http:\/\/apprend.io\/apush\/apush-dbq-breakdown\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">DBQ and rubric breakdown from Apprend<\/a> is a comprehensive look into how a DBQ response can earn top points and why. Options are given for each step of the writing process, enabling you to see the best possible answer for all sections of the essay.<\/p>\n<h2>APUSH DBQ Example #6: Your Classroom<\/h2>\n<p>Looking for more examples? One of the easiest places to find APUSH DBQ samples is in your own classroom. Ask your current APUSH teacher to view previous students&#8217; writing samples.
