As some of you — okay, all of you! — may have heard, Zayn Malik is “stepping down” as one of the premier (or, the premier, depending on whom you ask) members of One Direction. No one really knows why, or what Zayn plans to do in the wake of his mega stardom, but really speaking most are too distraught to even think that far into the future.
For now, we are left alone with our reactions, which can range from the following.
If you want to just go home, shut your door, listen to all your One Direction albums, and not even come out for dinner, you are despondent. In other words, you are in low spirits and want to be left alone.
Are you over-the-top sentimental and teary-eyed over Zayn’s departure? Oh, how could he leave? The band is not going to be the same without him (sob, sob). If that’s your reaction, then you are likely feeling maudlin.
Are you so angry that he would just leave the band, while they are touring no less? Are you spray-painting “Zayn is a selfish jerk” and church walls? Do you want to overturn cars and burn down public buildings? Well, if you are that angry, you are apoplectic, a word that describes anger so intense that you can barely speak.
Do you simply not care? Well, if so, then I have a word for you: apathetic. Pathos-, from the Greek for feeling, couple with the prefix ‘a-‘, gives us a word that means not caring, or having no feelings towards a certain subject.
