Putting the finishing touches on those college essays? Read on for some useful tips.
Read your essay aloud
Reading your essay aloud is one of the best ways to find any mistakes you may not have noticed. You’ll also get a better sense of how you’ll come off to an outside reader. This method will allow you to fix any wording that doesn’t sound quite right.
Have a stranger edit it
Well maybe not a stranger… But pick someone you don’t know too well, like a first grade teacher or family friend. They’ll be able to tell you how the essay portrays you, from the perspective of someone with little context about your background. So again, you’ll get a sense of how you come off to an outside reader. It’s useful to get some different perspectives, rather than just those of your parents and college counselor.
Take a break
Don’t like your essay? Feeling stuck? Don’t panic. Take a break for a week and come back to it. You’ll see it from a new perspective. Once your mind is clearer, you’ll likely be able to think of new ways to answer the prompt.
